Length of school skirt for Year 7

My DD starts year 7 this year and we have had a nightmare with the school skirt. The school only allows 2 styles which, of course, have to be purchased from the school outfitters. One style was awful and the second style suited her much better. The trouble was they didn't have one long enough in stock but they ordered her a longer one.

The school's uniform policy stresses that skirts for year 7 should be below the knee to allow for growth. My DD is already 5ft 4 and the skirt comes to about an inch above her knee. A friend who's DS already goes to the school said she could get a warning for incorrect uniform.

Should I write her a note for the first day? I've bought the longest skirt in the shop. I'm I worrying over nothing? Maybe they need to be a little more flexible in their choice of skirts. DD doesn't seem worried - she said I'll just tell me it was the longest we could get.

What do you wise MN's think?

Makes me glad my dds school banned skirts some time ago...

If DDs school did that, 100% of them would wear black skin type leggings. Given we are in a rural area with no public transport it is not possible to send 100% of the girls home.

Uniform has to be a compromise. I just wish school would publicly accept that and get on with teaching and stop waiting everyone's time and parents money.

TBH I'm pro school uniform, as at least it stops the kids mithering about what to wear, what other kids will wear vs what they wear, etc. Expensive though!

However, I agree with other statements about how the school uniform manufacturers do seem to be overdoing it in response to the obesity epidemic (I think dd's class had about 2 kids in 31 that fitted that description) with many secondary school skirts no longer having the adjustable waist. I also agree that they never make them long enough. DD is tall and skinny, but not exceptionally so; I'd say she was about perfect! So why is it that we too have the problem of getting stuff that fits properly? Her new school is really strict and I can honestly say I've never seen any dodgy skirt-rolling there. Just as well, since they aren't allowed trousers.

She's shot up a bit since I got her uniform together and this discussion is reminding me I'd better get her to try it on again....I've already had bad news on her shoes (grew a whole shoe size over the break fgs, I only got the last pair in June!)

Have e-mailed DS's school about a similar issue with trousers (a single style introduced this year).

The size he needs (25" waist maximum, but the same length as the 'Long' length so considerately provided IF you have a 28" waist or larger) isn't made.

I have e-mailed the school asking for an alternative style that can be obtained in a full range of lengths. If that produces no joy, I shall send him in in a pair that really does fit him (BhS long length, 2 years above his chronological age but for some reason nicely slim cut), having told the school beforehand what to expect.

Grrrr
