Philosophy or psychology at IB?

Ds has decided to go down the IB route rather than A-levels - he's doing English and history at higher level and maths, biology and German at standard level but has a dilemma with his third choice for higher level. He can't decide between philosophy and psychology. He enjoys and is good at philosophy but thinks the psychology curriculum looks really interesting. He thinks the clincher will be which is regarded as better by universities (will be aiming for Russell Group) - any advice please?

What does he want to do at university?

Probably history either single honours or combined with a compatible subject

For students who don't want to study psychology later on, they will often choose psychology A-level as a "science-related" subject instead of an experimental science. Your DS is not in that category.

Philosophy is the better subject, IMO.

Philosophy sits better than psychology for a history degree.

Philosophy is the more academic subject and traditionally more desirable. Also the IB has a focus on philosophical methods so may help him with his other subjects.

Also, graduates with philosophy tend to be more employable.

Thanks - unanimous vote for philosophy then!

Philosophy is fantastic. I am very biased, but I would recommend having a look at philosophy degrees as well if he enjoys it...best three years ever!
