Why are some girls so nasty?

Mufti today and DD text me to say she got off the bus and a so called friend said "why the fuck would you dare to wear that outfit out".

DD is having a bit of a confidence crisis at the moment, she's shot up in height and is going through an awkward phase. This is year 7.

I bet we've all seen it, or had it happen to us or even done it.
I do what I can to build my dd's resilience and to remind her that this sort of thing isn't the mark of a friend. Building a life outside school can help.
I also drop in the odd anecdote about some witches I knew at school and how they ended up. I'm in my 50s now so a few haven't pulled it around yet. Maybe never will.

I am in my 40s and went to a girls' school. Maybe I was really lucky, but I don't think the verbal bullying was as bad then

Me too NotYoda. There was some bitchiness, and we weren't saints, but it was nothing like today. Not least because we really had begun to grow up and think about the effects of our behaviour on others by the ages of about 14/15. Having said that, it was quite an old-fashioned school with Prayers every morning, and the headmistress (who was a vicar's daughter) used to give a short talk every day, and it was often about putting other people first, looking out for others, trying to be kind. One year she told us not to bother giving up chocolate or anything like that for Lent, but instead to spend half an hour a day trying to make things better for someone else. I wish there were more of that in schools today.
