Hi all, moving into the Magdalain Road area, looking for schools for DD who is bright but has suffered a lot with bullying. Any suggestions?

Are you looking at private or state school provision? What year is your daughter in (assuming she's at secondary school already although maybe not?)...

Oh, sorry Blush state school, she will be in year 9 in sept, not been in school for 6 months, due to the bullying, so is very nervous Sad

Go and see Burntwood - fantastic languages, music, pastoral care, supportive ethos amongst the girls.

It's normally full, though...

gazzalw · 11/07/2013 21:25

Possibly Graveney but I guess unlikely as it's well over-subscribed....

Possibly Bolingbroke Acedemy (depending upon which end of Magdalene Road you are...)

I think you are going to find that the very good state schools may have waiting lists even in Year 9.....

You might be wise to contact Merton, Wandsworth, Kingston, Sutton and Lambeth Borough Education Departments to see which schools have availability and then get back to us with details so we can advise you.....

Good luck....

Sorry I meant Academy not Acedemy - not sure what happened there????

savoirfaire · 11/07/2013 23:25

Don't think Bolingbroke will have a Y9 for your DD I'm afraid.
From what (little) I know:
Burntwood - have hard good things, mixed intake though and have heard of some bullying but dealt with reasonably.
Chestnut Grove in Balham - I hear really great things about this school these days particularly re arts subjects.
Graveney - give them a call but think you're less likely to get a place here.
Ashcroft - don't know much about it but it's near-ish so give them a call. They have a semi-streamed intake.

Think you are on the direct trainline for Kingston/Teddington etc too? Might be worth looking in that direction?

gazzalw · 12/07/2013 07:50

Yes, there's Coombe Girls in Kingston, some very good comprehensives in Sutton.....

But I would certainly get on the case of getting in contact with the local Borough Education Departments and get back to us with availability so we can say thumbs up or thumbs down....

You only have a week and a half until the end of term so really if you want to visit the schools and see teaching in action you need to get on the case today....

Good luck and feel free to come back to us...

We know a child who joined Ashcroft at the end of y9 after a rather troubled start to his secondary career and seems to be flourishing there

But to be honest you're not going to have much choice as it purely depends on which schools have a place, which is probably not going to be the better ones

Mhysa · 12/07/2013 12:16

Thanks all, yes I think if we had our heart set on one place, chances are we wouldn't be able to get a place, won't be moving until the first of September, so don't think the LBED would let us do anything until we are in the property.
But I'm willing to wait with DD1 to get into a good school, a few more months its ideal, but rather that than putting her into a school where all the old problems would potentially reappear. She's working well at home in the short term, but feel she is missing out on a lot.
