Best Welsh/English and German/English dictionary for year 7

Apologies if this has been discussed in the year 7 starter thread, I had a quick look and couldn't see it.
DS brought home the list of things he needs to start year 7 which includes a Welsh/English dictionary and a German/English dictionary.
Does anybody have any recommendations for either of these, that isn't going to look too 'hard' and just be consigned to the bottom of the school bag, but equally has enough words in to be useful?

Difficult - personally I'd say that Y Geiriadur Mawr is very much better than any other Welsh/English dictionary I've used, but then it is a big thing to carry around in your school bag. Would it be worth asking the school if they have a recommended dictionary? My experience with a 'learners' dictionary' was that it never had the words I wanted in it so I'd avoid those at least.

If its for homework geiriadur.net is the easy option Grin

Thanks Takver, that's helpful. I saw that one on Amazon, but was finding it hard to work out from the reviews if anything was really suitable.

I don't really like Y Geiriadur Mawr much as there seems to be a fair bit missing but the one I prefer is dated 1977 on amazon so not helpful at all. The Modern Welsh Dictionary has a grammar summary in it which looks useful - there is nothing like that in Y Geiriadur Mawr (at least not in my edition)

That one you've linked to looks good, eatyourveg. DD's asleep, but I'll try to remember to ask her what dictionary they use at school tomorrow. She does have a smaller soft covered dictionary, maybe Collins, will ask her if that is any good.

Is your ds a learner or in Welsh medium, littlemissgreen? Not sure if that would make a difference - perhaps dd is more inclined to want just words than things like the grammar IYSWIM.

BTW this is the one I got as a learner pre-dd & found very gappy.

Thanks both.
He is definitely a Welsh learner! He is in an English medium school. We are trying to hard to speak Welsh at home (DH and I are slowly learning). Unlike his younger brothers he is struggling to pick it up, especially writing, so I think grammar would be useful.
