6a in science in yr 8....that ok?

DD has got 6a in science for her end of year 8 test. She left primary school with a level 5 so surely that's not enough progress for 2 years work? Or could the primary result have been inflated? Either way, is she on track?
Thanks

What do the school say? They're surely the best judge of whether she's on track or not, given that they actually know her?

They think everything is ok....well I think they do, I haven't heard otherwise. I think going from a level 5 in yr 6 to a 6a in yr is not that big a jump, but maybe it is. We haven't got another parents evening this year so not sure who to ask

My dd is in Y8. The information given by her school is that the expected level of progress in KS3 is 1.5 sub-levels a year, so this is about right and on target for level 7 at the end of KS3.

MadameDefarge · 12/06/2013 15:29

yes, crazy. Ours are two sub-levels per year, to total two whole levels by the end of KS3.

And secondary tend to peg on their own assessment tests rather than sats for starting levels in year 7.

DS did not do SATS, so he did the CAT test (all kids do) and then an assessment beginning on year 7. He was pegged at level 5 to achieve level 5b by end of y7. He has achieved 6b so far this year with one more assessment to go. So I reckon he should end up with 7c min at end of y 9.

also level 5 has three sublevels. so if she started at level 5c, then two additional sublevels in year 6 takes her to 5a, and another two year 8 to 6b. Bang on really.

MadameDefarge · 12/06/2013 15:32

sorry, that should have read year seven, not year six.

gillviola · 12/06/2013 21:48

It depends on what level your dd gained at primary school. My dd is on a 6a in Y8 having gone with a 5c - so I am more than happy, especially as she 'doesn't like science.'

MadameDefarge · 13/06/2013 22:51

you are very welcome, Barbie.

DS1 has also been assessed as 6A in his end of Y8 exams and there I was thinking he'd done really well! Grin

SanityClause · 14/06/2013 19:45

The target is for children to reach level 5 by the end of year 9, so she is doing really well.
