Sixth forms in North Wales

Hi, I may be going to work at Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital in Bangor. If this works out it will mean a move for my DD who is going into sixth form in September. I would really value some advice about local sixth forms. Is the fact that she can't speak Welsh going to be a problem? Also, any recommendations about good places to live or anything else that I should know! thanks

Ysgol David Hughes is a good one, by Menai Bridge so not far from Ysbty Gwynedd. They take kids up to 18. Its a Bilingual school, so not a problem if she doesnt speak Welsh. DSD went there and did really well.

Bangor isn't a bad place to live, but personally I'd prefer to be further out of the town.

Thanks lteve! Where do you think are the nicest places to live? Don't want DD to feel too isolated though.

With a 16 year old TBH I'd go for Bangor itself, to save the "God it's so boooooring here mum" issues. But for me it would be Menai, Llangefni, Bethesda, Gaerwen or Benllech. All good sized places that it's easy to get to the Hospital from.

(LlanfairPG is just down the road, but you can't live there if you can't pronounce it!!)

Theres a website nothwalestoday.com that gives some useful, funny and often irrelevant info. Take what they say with a pinch of salt mind Grin

All brilliantly helpful. What is Llanfair PG like? Bizarrely, I got my mum to teach me how to say the name when I was a kid. Unfortunately, I do not know any more Welsh than that.
Some people seem quite negative about Bangor, what puts them off?

Just looked at the website, really useful and hadn't found it before. Thanks

It's the students really that people moan about, but I think that's pretty normal for Uni towns? Bangor isn't pretty, but it is functional and has most of what you would need.

I cursed it when I was looking for maternity clothes - not a single shop, but probably not what you need! DSD calls it 'ChavTown', but again I don't think its that bad. It's quite run down in places and there isn't a lot of employment, but you've got that covered, so I don't see why it wouldn't suit.

LanfairPG is a one horse town really, nice to look at but bad facilities.

Landofmyfathers · 13/06/2013 18:32

Thanks for taking the time to help. Will take a closer look at Bangor and Menai Bridge. Hopefully no maternity clothes will be required!
Is it the town centre that is run down or residential areas?

LtEveDallas · 13/06/2013 18:46

Bit of both really. There are some nice houses close to the hospital though. The town centre itself isn't too bad, and there are a couple of retail parks just outside. A huge Tesco Extra has not long been built not far from the hosp.

Houses actually in the town are full of students, but there is the odd family area and a couple of nice parks. I prefer Menai TBH.

I need to admit though, a lot may have changed. My ILs are in Holyhead, we were there for a while but ive not been back other than weekend visits for a couple of years now.
