Girls or Mixed school in Bristol similar to QEH?

QEH has really suited ds - gently stretched and challenged him in a way that he's responded to willingly - academically, in sport and in music. The staff are fantastic role models and inspiring teachers (on the whole). Where can dd get the same opportunities? Anyone with experience of QEH and a dd in a Bristol secondary school ?

(Changed to local name to re-post here from Local)

We're still a way off this, but I'm hoping Red Maids for my daughter and QEH for son. The little research I've done seems to show a similar ethos between the schools. Perhaps speaking to the Head at QEH may be helpful?

There's Redland High too. They seem to do lots of activities and trips with QEH, so I suspect they share at least a bit of ethos.

I don't know exactly what they're like now, but they always used to be very strong at music (and still push it in their news etc) and sport.

We looked around Red Maids and Redland High and preferred Redland High, due to the amazing Art block and caring ethos. I have friends with daughters at Red Maids though, and they seem happy. We were very lucky to be offered a place at Colston's Girls' which I preferred to both though!

Thanks all. Anyone else with ds in QEH and girl in secondary school now or last couple years?

Ahh, I went to Colston's. (Totally irrelevant obviously).

We liked the look of Badminton. A friend has a DD already there and says the 2 schools do socialise from time to time.

Marmitelover55 · 02/06/2013 14:28

ohforfoxsake - was that Colston's Girls' or Colstons? My dd1 is really looking forward to it (and so am I Smile

I think QEH and Redmaids are partner schools, so do lots of social things together, although Redland High seem to do lots of social things with them too - the boys of QEH seem to be much in demand Grin

Barbeasty · 02/06/2013 20:06

I have a feeling a head of Redland and a head of QEH were married, or certainly some sort of connection at some point.

I don't know if it's still a shared entrance exam for lots of the Bristol private schools, but Redland, Redmaids, Colston's Girls, Bristol Grammar, Bristol Cathedral and QEH (can't remember about Clifton High or Badminton) used to have a joint admissions process.

As the only boys school left in that group they're bound to be in demand!

The website says Redland offers taster days, do the others? That might be a good start.

Marmitelover55 · 02/06/2013 20:35

I think Redland and Redmaids have a joint exam - you have to express a preference, and they sit the exam there. Colston's Girls and Bristol Cathedral Choir School are now both state academies, so still have an exam (non-verbal reasoning), but use fair-banding to allocate places across the city. BGS and QEH have separate exams as far as I am aware.

My daughter did a taster day at Redland High and loved it - she made a lovely ceramic jug, which she gave her dad for Christmas. I know Redmaids do taster days too, and imagine the other private schools do to, but not Colston's Girls' or BCCH anymore, as so over-subscribed that they don't need to.
