Getting school placement during a summer relocation from US

Hello,

We are new here but have been reading many threads over the past week which have been extremely helpful. My DH's company has just told us they would like him to relocate from the Boston office to the London office over the summer. We have 3 children DD 11.5, DS 10, DD 2.5. It seems to me our eldest will go into secondary school while the middle will need a place for 1 year at a primary. Private schools will not be a viable option financially. I am hearing how over subscribed the state schools are and am wondering if a summer move will make it virtually impossible to get my kids into a school. My husband's office is close to the District, Central, and Piccadilly lines so we have been looking at Richmond, Kew, and Ealing. But have recently found Teddington and while it may not be as convenient for commuting it seems to have a great looking secondary school. I found an old thread talking about Teddington School and it seems as though it has moved away from using feeder schools for placement and is now using catchment area criteria. Wondering if anyone has any advice on how to get the kids into a school at this time of year. Thank you, {Very nervous mom}

Hi spy8s,

You could try www.schoolsmart.co.uk as they are based in West London.

A family I know from California used them last summer when they relocated here.

Good luck

Appreciate your nervousness - very unsettling until you find the right place. Have you had a look at Richmond Park Academy in East Sheen? Just had a good Ofsted and local grapevine is saying that it's a school which really cares about individuals and is getting good results across the board. Talked recently to a couple who had transferred there from a private school and were extremely happy. I think they still have places altho roll is growing. Am told the Head is fantastic, always the measure of what to expect throughout a school. Hope this helps.

Like others have said, it's not unusual for people to commute a long way into the City. We Brits are liable to moan, but in most cases the trains are fast and reliable - if somewhat pricey. You can travel a long way in 60 minutes if you are getting "out" of London rather than across it.

You may have a better quality of life in a market town outside London than in the suburbs. Housing is cheaper (everything is cheaper), life is slower and not so "competitive" and there will be less pressure on schooling. Have a look where you can get from Kings Cross, St Pancras, Euston, Liverpool Street, Moorgate or even Marylebone or Paddington.
