Grammar School Appeals question

Hi

Does anyone know when the Kent grammar schools appeal panel make their decision - is it immediately after hearing your appeal, or do they listen to all the appeals first and then make a decision at the end of the three days of appeals?

Just had our appeal. Anxiously waiting.

The panel has to hear all cases before they make any decisions.

I would just like to understand the process a little better, not that it will change the eventual outcome I know!

In your experience, is it most likely that in order to help their decision process at the end, the panel would filter each appeal into a "definite yes", "definite no" and a "maybes" pile. Otherwise trying to remember and decide at the end of seeing 74 appeals without that initial filtering system might be overwhelming?

Does that make sense?

I know for a fact that there's others waiting on Kent appeals there, so you won't be alone.

We had a phone call about 6 hours after our appeal with the good news.

"3.9 In multiple appeals, the panel must not compare the individual cases when deciding whether an appellant?s case outweighs the prejudice to the school. However, where the panel finds there are more cases which outweigh prejudice than the school can admit, it must then compare the cases and uphold those with the strongest case for admission. Where a certain number of children could be admitted without causing prejudice, the panel must uphold the appeals of at least that number of children." School Appeals Code 2012

They can't compare the cases when they are deciding whether the prejudice is outweighed.

So the process would be:

Hear cases -decide whether prejudice is outweighed.

Decide how many places can be awarded

Of the outweighed pile - compare cases to decide who gets them.

They shouldn't compare. They make each decision on an individual basis- if they decide that they will approve all appeals it is up the the school to dal with the extra pupils. So it's on the strength of your appeal alone, not in comparison to the others. If that makes sense. We heard by letter 3 or 4 days after the last day of the appeals- they send the letters out all together.

As Lougle says, they will only compare appeals if the first round of decision making leaves them with more successful appeals than they think the school can manage.

The panel as a whole should not make any decisions on individual appeals until they have heard them all. It is possible information will emerge in a later appeal that will affect one or more earlier appeals. They must, of course, keep notes so that they can make proper decisions.
