Recommendations for boarding schools for sporty academic girl

Hi - I have a very sporty (county level) bright girl currently flexi boarding in year 7 - not overly happy with her current school. she is being taught in a small subset of top set as the school is very sporty but not very academic. She is getting bored and starting to mess around which is worrying me. Any ideas as to a good mixed school in the North - probably boarding as we live in the countryside. I think its best if I start looking round quickly - thanks to all in advance!!b Smile

Only the one down south I'm afraid...Millfield

St Peter's, York. I don't know how it is for girls' sport, but as it's excellent or boys I can't imagine it's anything other than similar. Good academic results too.

Oakham is a good school academically for those who want to learn but has fantastic extra-curricular activities particularly sport.

Had at least one old Oakhamian in the Olympics. I know of one England crickets man and 2 former and current England rugby players. Plenty of pupils at county level.

I did very well academically but its philosophy is every leaves very well rounded.

The Goods School and Tatler reviews are spot on.

Not Peter's. Great for boys, not for girls, and hardly any boarding. Try Queen Margaret's where there is already a Junior Olympian and dozens of county level sports women. Casterston has just "merged" with Sedburgh and girls are leaving in droves to other schools rather than go co-ed, otherwise I'd suggest Casterton. If you definitely want co-ed, try Sedburgh though.

Ampleforth?

Does it have to be north? Wycombe Abbey, Cheltenham?

stealthsquiggle · 12/03/2013 18:51

As long as sportiness includes running, look at Sedbergh.

Would also second Oakham. They will put your daughter forward for county level sport and the boarding staff will be able to help her get to training etc. There have been several fantastic sports men/women from Oakham - they have a very full fixtures programme in all major sports and have great facilities. Academics very good too.

SeraphinaFuchsia · 12/03/2013 18:56

thewhistler am only thinking North as would like to be no more than an hour away from school for matches etc - we are in West Cumbria - I looked at Sedbergh but am a bit worried about schools who have just merged with regards to settling in periods etc - also not sure how good their girls sport is??

Oakham is probably too far in that case but very few parents go to matches.

If you can visit it is just a beautiful school set out like Oxford or Cambridge. Some of the best sports facilities in the country. Leicester Tigers play on the playing fields and Leicestershire cricket team train there. How many co-ed schools have a shooting range or Eton fives courts?

I honestly do not work for them. Was a pupil from 1991-1998. I would never look back at the opportunities I had. It was the true all round experience.

I ended up at Oxford but with Duke of Edinburgh Gold studying a very unique and difficult subject. I played netball, lacrosse and tennis - not at county level but was encouraged to take part.

Their new science school is out of this world and I really rate the new headmaster.

It was the first independent school to go co-ed over 40 years ago and is now 50:50.

Please feel free to PM me for more info and I will prove that I don't work for them.

Happiest 7 years of my life and any children of mine would go there without a doubt despite the expense and it is not cheap.

Sharpkat - I was also at Oakham for your last year! (I was a teacher though!)

Sharpkat · 12/03/2013 20:13

I think I may know who you are. Did you marry a teacher or have I got the wrong person?

Sharpkat · 12/03/2013 20:16

And if you didn't I will be able to find out who you are as I am very close to the former deputy head so have access to red books going back to 1976.

jo164 · 12/03/2013 20:17

No - I was the other one in the same department with the same name! Would have only joined when you were U6th I think. I was resident in Lincoln as well.

Sharpkat · 12/03/2013 20:26

Were you there for 2 years? If so our paths never crossed but you may have heard of me as I went to Oxford to read a subject they know do not teach.

jo164 · 12/03/2013 20:40

Yes, 2 years. I can't put a name to you - but I'm now intrigued!
