results today of science GCSE what does it mean?

My DS1 despite doing literally no work achieved a B in the double "additional" science GCSE today (P3 C3 B3) what has he passed because I understand that there is some course work and another exam (P4 C4 B4 I think) in the summer.

It seems so complicated. What exactly does additional science mean is half way between triple and core I'm assuming. I was shocked how basic the level is no wonder the jump to AS is so huge.

You can have three sorts of science GSCE
core on its own is one GCSE
core and additional is two GCSEs
biology, chemistry and physics is three GCSEs

Each one just adds more modules but they aren't any more difficult.
