Anyone had their interviews for college?

DS1 had his yesterday.

He decided against A levels - GCSEs have been a fairly unpleasant process for him so far and he couldn't face another 2 years of it (and I suspect he wouldn't have coped). So he has decided to do a Furniture-making course, and then proceed to level 2 after the first year. Ideally he wants to go on to make musical instruments. We were a bit worried he'd be greeted with scepticism - it's not exactly a mainstream career.

But no! He was greeted with open-arms by the lecturer who interviewed him. For a start he will end up with Cs and above in all his subjects at GCSE - many of the pupils that go in for carpentry etc don't and have to do 'functional skills' courses (ie maths and english) during the first year. The man came up with loads of ideas for where DS could go after college - suggested courses that would allow him to specialise, even hinted he knew of someone who might take him on as an apprentice.

DS, who had got used to being an also-ran at school, came out glowing and happy.

That's great. What a boost for him. Sounds a really interesting choice of career too. wish I'd thought of something like that!

That sounds fantastic. What an interesting career choice. I know a luthier - I think this is what a stringed instrument maker is called - and he's one of the best. People come from all over for him to fix their violins.

I am on a bit of a high TBH. Been so worried about him recently. I know there are no guarantees that he will be able to make a living but its what he wants to do and he can do it - he's already made a guitar at home and he love DT and is also a good guitarist.

I think that's wonderful ... child who knows what he wants to do, worthwhile, unusual, not wasting squillions on university. Good luck to you both.
