Does anyone have a rough idea of the catchment area of Harrogate Grammar School for people living in Harrogate please? Thanks very much.

Do you have to go to Rossett if you are closest to it, or does it not work like that? If you put HGS first and you are close enough, will you definitely get it?

If you want to be really safe, buy a house on Arthurs Avenue!
Any of the roads off Otley Rd would be good, there's quite a variety of styles but none of it is cheap. Or in the area near the valley gardens / cold bath road.
Or one of the villages - the school bus service is good though you have to pay for it in sixth form.
Both my DCs went to HGS, one academic (went to Oxbridge), the other not so academic, but the school were v supportive of him, especially in the sixth form, and he went to a middle ranking uni in the end and was v happy at the school. Both are still at uni so fairly recent experience.
Better than St Aidans IMHO.

Hmm, when I was at school the Rossett kids used to sell fags to, and bully, the HGS kids on the school bus, vandalise it, etc. Has it improved a lot since then?

Used to be that St. John Fishers, St Aidans and HGS were 'nice', and Granby (now Harrogate High), and Rossett were for the rough kids.

Would be surprised if that has really changed....

I'd forgotten that thread!

On admissions, double check but it should be an equal preference system. So if you put HGS first and you qualify for a place there on distance then that is where you will be allocated, even if you are nearer another school.

Rossett has definitely improved. If your DC is in the top sets it wouldn't be that bad a prospect.

Thanks Skippy and scaevola. But in your opinion if they are not likely to be in the top set, then HGS would be a better option?
