IB standard/higher/stidies?

DD has started with maths standard but thinks she wants to drop down to studoes.

Does it matter? She thinks not. She doesn't plan to do maths related anything afterwards.

Her other choices are
Biology, chemistry and geography higher.
English standard
Italian studies.

Would it matter if she dropped down the maths?

She has to do three subjects at higher and three at standard.

. Thats what is confusing me. I got he italian wrong. It is a standard level but i don't understand how the maths studies fits in.
DD said it is just a lower level but as she doesnt want to do economics or any university type maths stuff it doesn't matter.

The IB program is made up of six curriculum area, with the student picking a subject from each area.

One of those areas is mathematics, so the student had to do one of four mathematics courses.

The IB is constructed this way because they believe that mathematics is an important, facilitating subject.

If your DD does not want to study mathematics, she should have chosen A-levels rather than the IB.

Math Studies is a Standard Level choice. MAth is organised in bands of difficulty/accomplishment. They are: Higher Level Maths and TWO choices at standard level - Math Methods and Math Studies. My DS did the lowest level - Math Studes and had no trouble with University admissions. They describe Maths studies as being only marginally more difficult than IGCSE Maths but my DS would argue that this isn't true - it is still very challenging. Hope this helps.

No. She's happy to do maths at IB level but doesn't want to do it at further education level. Which is why she thinks it is ok to do it at 'studies' rather than standard level.
I am just wondering if that matters to points at the end of it all or not.
Because she is perfectly capable of doing it at standard i think she should.

We were advised that concentrating on the Higher Level subjects and ensuring that they score highly is critical to University entrance success. If your DD is not going to be an economist or architect or a profession that requires strong maths skills then Math Studies is a perfectly reasonable option. The numeric score she will get at the end will not be devalued because she is doing Maths Studies - but the lighter load might enable her to score a 6 or 7 in her chosen higher levels. If she is intending to pursue Chemistry or Biology as a University degree she should double check that she doesn't need the Maths Methods to get onto the course. School advisors should know.

If she really doesn't need a higher level of maths then Maths Studies is a good option, it will contribute exactly the same way as Maths Standard to her overall points score and she may be able to get a better score in Studies than Standard. My son dropped from one to the other and got 7 for Studies, he would probably have got 5 or 6 in Standard. Just before he took his IB the IBO changed the name of Maths Methods to Maths Standard which in my view has caused confusion as Maths Studies is also a standard level subject.

I did the IB and took Maths Studies and no bugger has ever questioned it. Most people have no idea what the IB is anyway.

Great thanks. Much clearer now.
