DS2 has to cover (groan) his geography exercise book with 9 images, 3 Physical Geography (yeah, yeah, mountain, river etc); 3 Human Geography (um- a city? intensive wheat production on a prairie? a rice paddy terrace?) and 3 Environmental geography - what on earth? No pun intended?

From a search online: "Environmental geography is the branch of geography dealing with the dynamics of Earth's surface features and their evolution through the actions of weathering and erosion. This type of study is linked to hydrology, environmental geology, and other facets of both geography and geology."

Isn't that what I'd call physical geography??

Physical Geography - rivers, coasts, plate tectonics, weather etc.
Human - cities, economy, development, industry, etc

Environmental is about how humans impact nature, eg pollution, acid rain, erosion, quarrying, etc.

Hot topics would be extreme weather - drought and flooding, rising sea levels.

I have just completed a degree in a related subject and am not familiar with this particular terminology.
I would suggest that it is as Knowsabit has detailed - so cover things like urbanisation, industry, economy etc. All of which (and related sectors) have a big impact on the environment.
It does seem quite tied to 'human' geography though - where humans go, they change things...permanent settlements, diverting river courses, producing and specialising crops, and so forth.

As a geog grad the first rule of geography is that it can be what ever you want it to be!!! Its a wonderful subject. Environmental geog can include wind power, making it rain (yes it can be done) desertification global warming (of course) flooding (New Orleans would be a good picture) environmental impacts assessments e.g. building power stations, the environmental impacts of ports/airports etc and even the effects of over fishing on fish migrations populations soil erosion from industrial farming I could go on (like all geographers!!)
Human geography urbanisation, migration industrialisation capitalism poverty crime developing countries versus developed countries division of labour exploitation by multi national companies ........

I would see it as the overlap between human and physical geography. Think, pollution, climate change, soil erosion. The impact of humans on the planet.

Thanks, all!
