What is the likelihood of any increase in marks in truth, or am I kidding myself its worth spending the nearly-£40 per subject? DS is 2 marks under the grade boundary in 2 subjects and I just think if we dont try we might always think what if! Would lift a C to a B, and a D to a C

Someone posted a couple of days ago about her DC having been remarked and the grade jumped from a D to a B. 2 marks is very close. I would have a word with the schools exams officer and see what they think.

Thanks for reply, spoke to head of 6th who said don't hold out much hope, but if it never happened, there would be no need for the service! Thats my twisted logic (crosses fingers!)

mandy DD is in a similar position with one of her GCSEs. She's one mark off an A*. She's going for a remark and crossing her fingers. I do think if they upgrade your paper you should not be charged as they got it wrong the first time (though I might be a bit unreasonable).

Yes re-marks can increase marks, but this is not always the case. If the mark after the re-mark is found to be lower then the new lower mark would stand as well.
As well requesting a re-mark, you can ask to receive a copy of your dcs script back from the exam board. This can be very helpful if you are considering a re-sit as it shows precisely where marks have been lost.

It is also important to remember that the marks given to the students are usually UMS marks and not the actual raw marks. So that an increase of 1 UMS point may be 1/2 a raw mark or 4 raw marks. It depends on the exact exam paper.

In the following article from Channel 4 "What are the chances of my grade improving after a re-mark?"
Based on requests for re-marks and grade changes for summer 2011 exams, 19 per cent resulted in a change to subject grade. In total, there were 204,600 re-mark applications last summer (out of 15.1 million GCSE, AS and A-level scripts marked by the exam boards): 12,250 produced changes to AS and A-Level results, and 26,270 for GCSE results.

Will read that, thanks

Just anecdotal but a son of a friend got a C changed to a B with 7 extra marks because the examiner forgot to mark a page. If the grade is unlikely to go down, go for it.

sue52 · 06/09/2012 15:57

Just read the article. It seems they will refund if the grade changes. 19% of papers submitted got their grades changed. That sounds quite good odds to me. FIFEBEBE,.your story goes to show examiners can make big errors.

I wouldn't bother because it is the UMS that's important surely not the grade
