I feel like a cat on hot bricks- can't wait for 3.30!

My y7 started yesterday so I know how you feel.

jemw · 05/09/2012 09:19

dd started today, met her friend to get the bus and train together....I keep looking at the clock wondering how she is doing!!

MikeLitorisRings · 05/09/2012 09:19

Yep.
I couldn't sleep last night for worry.

He said he was ok but I could see his little hand shaking

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 05/09/2012 09:20

Mine started yesterday but all they did was check all the pages in their planner were present and correct, and have some assemblies - she was both tired and underwhelmed at 3.30, but is looking forward to today when things start 'properly'. Was in agonies of indecision about whether to set off early and risk hanging around like a Billy No Mates waiting for friends at the end of the road, or whether she was leaving it too late and they'd be impatient!

She is supposed to get homework in RE and Geography today - I predict:

  1. Write a page about your family and the beliefs and values you think are important to you
  2. either 'mark your house on a map' or 'what is the geography of your house'.

As I predict English will be 'write an autobiography' and History will be your family tree, and German will be saying your name and your parents' names in German. Year 7 homework is so very individual-based!

Mine was super laid back-the only thing that panicked him was tying his tie- it keeps going wrong.

Dropped him off at his friend's house to walk- he wouldn't even let me take him on the first day :(

Bet you're right TOSN- let's compare notes this evening!

What is mainly bothering mine is the year 7 area for break times, which is unenticingly called 'Black Square'. Seems sad after all the tree-climbing and running-about games only last July that now they are all supposed to cluster in Black Square (which I haven't seen but picture as quite grim!).

Prob better than being chucked in with the big kids I suppose, but still!

seeker · 05/09/2012 09:45

I found it sad that dd stopped playing the minute she hit Secondary school. Boys still seem to play, but girls tend to walk about in shifting groups, falling in and out of favour 6 times a lunchtime.

Mine started yesterday, year 7 had the whole place to themselves as it was induction day etc . Real lessons today. She's dead keen and up at the crack of dawn, let's see how long that lasts.Once she saw some friends I was predictably shooed away at the school gates.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 05/09/2012 09:51

Yes, it is sad - just as in year 6 the class always really starts to bond and play whole-class games together, it becomes unacceptable or not possible after 6 weeks away!

Secret7 · 05/09/2012 09:57

DD started today. She was quite relaxed and got up early to "do her hair" etc.

She had a transition week last term so is now familiar with the school layout and has already met new friends who are in the same form. She had a day out with one of them during the holidays which went well.

Her 2 friends came knocking at the door and one of them promptly burst into tears when I let her in as she didn't want to go. Upset friend soon recovered and they all went off merrily.

bubby64 · 05/09/2012 10:01

My 2 started today, they were up and ready for 7am, raday to catch the bus at 8am. Bet that doesn't last long, Grin. I have taken the day off so I am her for their return at 3pm, bit of a change from Primary, their school day now runs from 8.20am to 2.30pm, so its early starts and they are going to have quite a long time on their own at home after school when DH and I are working Sad

bubby64 · 05/09/2012 10:04

"ready" , raday indeed!

EcoLady · 05/09/2012 10:10

My DD trotted off to meet her friend who has older siblings at the school so they all got the bus together.

Her biggest worry is getting lost. They gave her a map on transistion day so she was thrilled when she found a smaller laminated version in her bag this morning (a rare mummy-brainwave moment!).

Iamnotminterested · 05/09/2012 10:12

The OriginalSteamingNit Mine has R.E and geography today too. Hmm HmmSmile; are we nearby, I wonder?

Vagaceratops · 05/09/2012 10:18

DS1 went off this morning, after being awake since 6am.

He was so nervous and excited, and I cant wait til 3pm.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 05/09/2012 10:23

Iam she also has English, Maths and PE....! She has no idea what she'll be doing in PE but dd1 says it'll be a kit check, so she's taken the lot.

Do all schools have insane names for form and teaching groups? IE - 7ab1 and 7Eng3 etc? We're trying to work out whether Ma1 and Ge1 means she's in top set maths and German - but if it does, she's in set 4 for all technical subjects and no set at all for English!

Iamnotminterested · 05/09/2012 10:27

Grin ah, no then, mine doesn't have the other subjects you mention today. Her form is 7 letter letter. Does yours set from day one then?

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 05/09/2012 10:36

Only in Maths, which is then your set for MFL as well - other stuff not set 'til year 8 (or wasn't when dd1 was y7, anyway). Her form is 7 and then two letters of teacher's name - it's all the other stuff that's insanely complicated. To be fair, we're not even clear sometimes whether MUS3 is group 3 for music, or music room 3, and so on!

Iamnotminterested · 05/09/2012 11:02

Nit I must admit I did a bit of code-breaking yesterday too, or triedto!!

I'm trying to work out if everyone does the same MFL or if a certain language indicates that you are destined for top/bottom/middle sets etc! Daft I know but I can't help it.

seeker · 05/09/2012 11:10

I know they set from day 1 in ds's school. Not sure how I am going to find out what sets he's in!

Asking who's in the same sets sometimes helps. But not always.

Ds started yesterday and hates it already. Doesn't know anyone in his tutor group but they all know at least 2 or 3 each so no one bothered to speak to him. I didn't sleep last night for worrying about him. Hope things get betterSad

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 05/09/2012 11:33

DS2 started today. I didn't have to tie his tie, he has a clip on one because of health and safety! Hmm

He's been ok about it, he knows where he's going and his classes etc as he was there for the last week of term. But I think he is going to find it hard.
He panics, he doesn't like change and he's not very good at writing, so I can see remembering homework being a problem and he will start his sentence with "i can't do it" or "I don't get it" before anyone has a chance to explain.
I hope he doesn't fall behind.

seeker · 05/09/2012 11:34

Oh, shazjack- i'm sure it will. It took dd about half a term to start to find her feet, so don't worry yet. But also don't be reluctant to ring the school if you think he really is unhappy- there are loads of things they can do to help.

QuangleWangleQuee · 05/09/2012 11:36

Always tricky at first Shazjack1, but I'm sure things will shake down and he will settle in soon. I remember people clinging to people in their class at primary at first when i started high school, but then moving on to make real friends they had something in common with after a bit.

Startailoforangeandgold · 05/09/2012 11:50

DD2 started yesterday and seems to have had fun. Moaned because I insisted she told me all about it.

I've promised I won't give her the Spanish inquisition everyday.

She's got DD1 and a friend from primary on the bus and several boys from her old top group in lessons. So plenty of familiar faces.
