Wrong GCSE History CA mark

I probably know the answer to this already but I have just found paperwork from school showing that the CA mark shown on the results for DD's Edexcel History GCSE is wrong. The results paper shows a mark of 43 and the report from school shows a mark of 60. Given that both of these marks will still give her an overall D, is it worth even querying it?

You should query it with the school.

It may be a clerical error (eg Optem filled in wrong). It may be that one group is reporting raw marks and another UMS marks.

However, it might be that the exam board scaled down the school's marks on moderation. They do this is of they feel the school has been over generous with the marking, beyond the ~10% latitude.

Btw, I think it's a bit silly of the school to put the CA mark on the report before it has been moderated.

I would think it likely that the school mark is simply the unmoderated mark. It may be worth asking the school if the CA was savagely marked down, for interest only. It may be that the school is appealing the moderation but it sounds as if your DD is one of the ones whose grade won't be affectd.

This happened to my DD (AQA History B course.) She was told by her teacher that she had achieved an A for the controlled assessment and got a B and a C in her 2 papers. DD said that all the pupils who had their CA work moderated were informed (she was not.)

Overal she was awarded a C- I am not really sure how these three grades add up to a C and am asking the school to investigate.

Probably different percentages for different modules? You can check on the AQA website how it is split. Also I've read on here that they should really tell them a CA grade as it can change, they should just tell them how many marks (DD's physics coursework changed from A to B and chemistry from C to D). We wish we had realised as she would have retaken it - all her other modules were A or A* but this was enough to bring the overall mark down to a B as it was such a big percentage Sad

Thank you everyone. I will have a word with the school when they open next week. It sounds like it was marked down which is a bit of a shame as she was also one of the poor unfortunates who took the AQA Foundation English on a C/D borderline.

Birgit - where the students were told by their teachers that their marks had been changed after moderation, that would have been internal moderation. We don't know whether our marks have been altered by the external moderators until results day. And if there is different weighting for each component of the qualifications, then even an A, B and C could even out as a C unfortunately.

somethingscary - unfortunately, once coursework has been marked, it shouldn't be re-submitted. And to start again with another investigation is a big demand on curriculum time. I did it with my GCSE group, because I took them over from another teacher and I was unhappy with the quality of them, but I did have to start again from scratch.
