A level Politics and Psycology

Still a year to go but trying to be prepared.
My DD would liek to do Eng, History, Politics and Psycology for AS levels next year. She is thinking along the lines of History or English at Uni.

What do Uni's think of Politics and Psycology? - I would assume they would not hold them in high regard but have no evidence to base this on.

Any advice gratefully received.

No two universities think the same about admissions (I have worked in 3) and regularly talk to others elsewhere.

But generally speaking as long as you have two traditional subjects such as English and History then the other subjects don't matter as much. Better to take subjects you are interested in and get good grades than to study more traditional subjects and do badly.

I think Politics is quite well regarded. I don't know about Psychology but I imagine it depends what you want to study at uni - it's probably useful for social science subjects.

Politics has a good reputation but Psychology is sometimes considered a 'soft' option even though it isn't (as many students find out too late).

Universities will look for 3 strong subjects such as History and English so taking Psych as a 4th subject will be fine.

She will be fine. Have a look at the 'preferred subjects' list at Oxford and Cambridge if it puts your mind at rest (where I think they are both on the second tier but still acceptable), but both subjects are intellectually demanding and will prepare her well for university. In any case these things only matter if she wants to apply to a VERY selective university, and even so, it is FAR better that she gets good grades and develops a depth of interest and knowledge in her subject as a result. Most A levels are hard and challenging, even the ones people think of as 'soft', and given she is already in a Humanities/Social Science groove, any of these will do.

My DD is about to start her second year at a Russell group uni doing English. She did English lit, politics, psychology at A2 plus art at AS.

She only got two offers from RG unis but then again, so did her friends for the same subjects, and same unis, and they had done history and languages typically instead of the politics and psychology. So I'd say, your subject choices are fine. But beware, English offers fro RG unis are very hard to get.

I got into an RG uni (for politics, which is a competitive subject) with A Levels in Politics, Psychology and Geography.

Politics is a well respected A Level, but it is less commonly taught in schools than (say) History. Psychology is seen in some quarters as being a bit soft, but in combination with two or three other academic A Levels it won't cause problems.
