Name labels in Secondary school uniform?

ConfessorKahlan · 31/07/2012 13:33

My eldest dd starts Yr7 soon. Am I supposed to put name labels in all of her uniform as I have done all through primary? I don't want her to be a source of amusement or a target if she is the only one with her name in her clothes.

There is so much to worry about, such as what bag should she take etc. It's hard enough to transition without me making it worse for her.

I hope that this is not a silly question!

Write on the laundry label?

sybilvimes · 31/07/2012 13:36

My eldest also starts secondary in sept. I am planning to label everything as they are much more likely to lose things than in primary (according to friends with older kids). One of my friends estimates she has spent over 30 quid on football socks alone last year - she now labels even these.

Watching with interest - ds1 also starting yr7. I'm going for obvious (name tape) labelling on blazer, tie and PE kit but seam style name tapes in trousers and shirts, as I've done in primary (also sensory issues, he's aspie).
Haven't figured out where / how to name the stuff like calculator etc. I've got small stickers from easy2name (with mn discount Wink ) but haven't a clue what's "done" Confused

Yes, we still label everything: boys are 13 and 15

bumpybecky · 31/07/2012 14:10

please label it all! I'm in charge of lost property at a middle school (years 5-8) you would not believe the amount of stuff that ends up lost!

CharlieSt · 31/07/2012 15:11

Hi ConfessorKahlan, I agree with bumpybecky, if it's not named then it's easily lost & there are plenty of name label designs aimed at older kids.

I've been using www.mynametags.com iron-ons for the past two years for labelling my DS's school uniform & my DD's nursery clothing & I haven't lost anything yet.

I also use the My Nametags stickers for labelling DS's water bottle & rucksack.

In fact, I thought their tags were so great that I've just started working for them.

GoodButNoMedals · 31/07/2012 15:15

Definitely label it!! I regularly get things left in my classroom. It's easy to return things that are labelled, not nearly as easy to match unlabelled items to their owners. Shoes and trainers too please.

My dd1 is moving into yr 8 and has had labels in everything this year without any problems. She has lost and been reunited with her coat 4 times!! If it hadn't been labelled she'd never have got it back so would have been very cold all winter.

ConfessorKahlan · 31/07/2012 16:06

Thanks for all the advice. I actually am a teaching assistant and student teacher, but in a primary school, so I am well aware of the headache of lost property. I just don't want to add to the stress of moving up for my DD by doing the wrong thing.

I will continue to name it all!

Named everything. Still lost items.
DS thrilled to be leaving his boarding school & attend a local 6th form college & removed the labels from his clothing himself!

dobby2001 · 31/07/2012 18:39

I use labelplanet as they are great and just stick on - stick like superglue so never had to replace a label - ever! They also are very plain so probably more suited to senior school where the fairy or toy car logos left over from primary might be an issue for them Smile

They do two styles of label packs and one comes in all sorts of sizes, including tiny - I used these on an ipod shuffle for a trip once Grin

Me and my mum have just spent part of this afternoon, having a natter and sewing labels onto DS1's seconadry school unifrom ready for Sep. They are white with plain black stitching, with just his name on them.

He was chuffed to see us doing it Grin. I have not labelled his socks though, as hoping that they will be relatively cheap to replace if they go missing...

shopofdreams · 31/07/2012 23:31

Yes, Yes, Yes

CointreauVersial · 31/07/2012 23:34

If I've just spent £30 on a blazer for a child who would lose her own head if it wasn't bolted on....hell, yes. Name tapes all the way.

NoComet · 31/07/2012 23:45

Names scribbled on labels are fine. DD1 makes me fold over the twee flower on her primary name tapes.

She does lost property duty and is amazed at the number of new unlabled £18 jumpers they send to the charity shop (its a very ordinary comp. far from all the parents can afford to keep replacing them). Confused

Her fleece vanished for 3 months despite having her name in inch high letters, but she did get it back eventually, so it is worth it.

Good thread ConfessorKahlan! There are so many things to think about with them starting "big" school! My DS is starting in Y7 and I'm like you, want to do the right thing without making him a target or embarrassing him. I'll be a wreck come beginning of Sept!

Lots of very useful advice here, thanks!

mnistooaddictive · 01/08/2012 10:03

When it comes to a calculator, scratch the name in on the back as this stops someone else stealing it! Dont buy expensive pens for school.

ConfessorKahlan · 01/08/2012 13:32

Just ironed in the name tapes on all of her uniform. Fortunately, the labels I used for primary did not have any embarrassing little pictures on them, just plain pink with name in printed in black ink.

I will be just like you Uberly, come Sept. when I have to take DD2 to childcare as usual, but DD1 will be standing at bus stop waiting for school bus. I will be a nervous wreck all day at work.

I'm dreading high school. My oldest loses everything now in one classroom (sen) . I have no chance of tracing its journey through a billion classrooms.

Theas18 · 01/08/2012 17:59

Label it all. Ds mouth guard even has his name cast into it!

For those who have see in labels with fairies ( or in our case trains!) remember you can always fold the picture under and sew it ŵith just he name facing out!

Uberly · 02/08/2012 00:54

Just to make sure, going as far as labelling all equipment is going OTT? E.g. pens, pencils, rulers??

mnistooaddictive · 02/08/2012 08:39

Yep, leave the pens and rulers alone! You always get someone whose protractor is now useless due to the numbers being covered up by a name label! Dont be that parent.

Uberly · 02/08/2012 16:56

Ha ha ha! No,I don't want to be 'that' parent Grin thanks!

EcoLady · 02/08/2012 18:27

Label everything, especially jumpers because they are taken off all the time. Scratch name on hard plastic bits like calculator and maths kits.
