Year 7 Literacy: ability range in top set?

DD1 has had her SAT/TA results, did well and I'm naturally keen for her to be placed in a high set in high school - what parent wouldn't? The school she is going to do not set until October after they have done their own assessments post teaching in mixed ability groups for all subjects up until then.

I have two questions for any KS3 teachers around:

  1. As I said in the thread title, what ability range would you expect to see in a year 7 top group on entry/October? (School has I think a PAN of somewhere between 150-180, sorry, not sure) Will the level 6 sats papers make a difference this year? No-one did the writing at her school, and I'm pretty confident that DD's writing is as strong as her reading.
  1. How much of a nod would a non-selective, above average but not top comprehensive give to SAT/TA results anyway?

Thanks.

I am sure the first half term will pass quickly and they'll put the kids into the appropriate groups ASAP. There is going to be a MASSIVE range of ability in that class! Ours were set in Maths and English right from the start and then they will also be set in Science from the start of Yr 8.

My dd is in top set for English. She is now at end of year 7 and they are getting level 6's. I'm not actually that fussed about the levels because she reads like crazy and is happy. Wish I could say the same for her science!

my dc are at an ordinary grammar.they are not set for english throughout the school.mx eldest was terrible at english only scraping a level 4 in year six. The school aim classes at the brightest and this pulls up the weaker students. He eventually got 2 A grades at gcse. I an unconvinced by the need to set in english .i think everyone can work on the same thing and differentiation is by outcome

My dds have always been top setof grammar, but ds is dyslexic like many others on here. 5b for reading at KS2 but just on the mark for 4C for writing. He aces at speaking and listening but his written stuff will never be that good. He has chosen not to use a laptop but gets 40% extra time. Obviously gets a reader for most subjects but not English reading! He is in the lower half of his grammar school Y10 class for English but is very lucky - great teacher, small class and as it's a grammar the class is fairly bright.
