Help with Year 6 grades (and SATS)

My DS got his year 6 report yesterday and it said he got 5a for all subjects - English, Reading, Maths, Science etc (I think there were about 6 subjects). We don't have parents evening until next week and his school is very unhelpful.

Can you tell me what the average achievement is for year 6, I think he has done well but I am not sure how well. Also are these his SATS results? He only did SATS for English and Maths so I am not sure if these will be scored seperately.

Sorry for being so dim

If you google it, you will find the expected NC levels for year 6 children.

Unless he sat the separate Level 6 papers (which many schools don't do) 5a is the highest available mark, so relax.

It says on the bottom of my sons reports the average level for each year.

4b ending year 6 but that is average my son is 5c ending year 5]

your son is doing well......

The sheet that tells you 5A's (which is above average and the highest score going unless of course he did the extension level 6 papers which not all schools did), is his teachers assessment for the whole year. There should have been a separate sheet for his, lets say official Sats results, for his English and Maths, and that would be a singular number without a letter beside it, for example,

English Test:
Reading 5
Writing 4

Mathematics 3,

athough I suspect with such a high teacher assessment, he would have a 5 against both sections of the English and the Maths.

a, b and c are what they call the sub levels within each group, a being the highest. The government's expectations is for a level 4c, although they want these to be raised as only 45% of children who achieve this grade go on to achieve a C in their GCSE's.

Hope that helps a bit. In a nutshell, your son did brilliantly and who knows, would have passed the level 6 too if he had done it.

Oh and secondary schools often you these results to stream the kids. Your son would more than likely be in the top group.

You should post this too in the primary section. There's a bit of chat going on about Sats there also.

Thank you all for your advice. It was really helpful as usual. I will post this on the primary section as well. Cheers
