Hi, could anyone tell me during what months in year 11 children sit the remainder of their GCSEs? Thanks (DD currently in year 10). Also, do they still get study leave and if so, when does this start, or does it vary between schools? Thanks!

If you look at the recent gcse support thread, every school is different.

Thanks, Bruffin - will take a look. Smile

Next year is the only year left where it is possible to sit modules. There is a session in January and then a session in June for aqa but other exam boards may be different. They will probably on your school calendar for next year if it has been published yet.

also November (straight after half term) and most GCSE exams start the middle to end of May and go on until the end of June

I really wouldn't advise booking a holiday until August as I'm guessing that's why you are asking!

There are some modular exams in Nov, some in Jan, more in May/June. It depends on the subject and the exam board.

Also, there are controlled assessments in many subjects throughout the year.

Also March for modular maths! If the school isn't careful year 11 can be non-stop exams.

In year 11 my daughter had Exams in November (Maths) January (Science), February (Science) March (Drama) , May and June (all the rest!) . Controlled assessments throughout as well. It never let up, basically.

Study leave didn't exist in our school. They broke up when exams were over.

If it is a holiday you are looking for I'd go next summer! If you don't have other children to worry about missing school, early July is a good time (just check there are no exams for what your child is sitting). About now they are at a bit of a loose end - although watch Prom and 6th form induction days! They tend to be about now!

It's a nightmare but my daughter would never have forgiven me if we had booked time away as she really needed the whole year to work towards the next goal. We went on a weekend break in June of year 10 because we won it and it was free. She spent 60% of that in her caravan bedroom because her French teacher changed the speaking assessment date by one week and she had to spend the time learning it!

so basically if the GCSE Board is AQA then the exams are November, January, March, May,June and early July. Plus any Controlled Assessments which may be lots because my DC does 2 MFL's, 3 seperate sciences ,Eng Lang and Lit and DT. Thank goodness second DC will come under new criteria for GCSE's this is ridiculous how do they cope with the pressure.

Main exam windows are January and May/June. But Science and Maths may have some in November and/or March.

CAs can fall at any time.

We advise parents not to take children out of school at all during Y10 and Y11.

FWIW, though, I much prefer this system. Schools can space things out - so we do English and Maths early, meaning that Options take priority for revision in the summer of Y11. Means they stand a better chance in college applications, too, as they know their actual grades.

Thanks so much for all the VERY helpful replies - much appreciated! Agree, BusyMummy, a lot of non-stop pressure! Still, will take DC for a holiday when it's all over!!! Good luck to everyone's DCs who are currently working hard towards exams. Thanks again. Smile

My ds (just finished Yr11) had modules / external exams in November, January, March and, in the Summer, his first exam was 14th May and final one was 27th June. In his school they had to go into school all day every day, until week beginning 28th May. Plus he had deadlines for different courseworks to be finished throughout the year.
If it is about booking time off, then I'd honestly suggest you don't, but, all schools are slightly different in terms of what they do for things like study leave and the exams will depend on which board and which subjects they take. It's not uncommon for schools to offer revision sessions in the Easter holidays too.
