DD is due to start secondary school, this September and i'm going to order her uniform. Question is: How much of each item do you buy your DC?

I don't want to buy too much and definitely don't want her to be left short of things.

A fresh shirt for every day
three bottoms (2 trs 1 skirt or whatever her preference)
Two jumpers
One tie
One blazer
A shit load of tights and black socks

Two gym tops
One gym bottoms

Queenofcake, PE at my son's school is twice a week and then if your children want to do after school sport that will be extra. My son has one of each thing for PE and I'm constantly nagging him to bring the kit home so that it can be washed. It seems that very few get their PE kit washed very often, it must stink!!

littlelegsmum · 03/07/2012 09:23

Ok, so i've decided - thanks to everyone for sharing. :)

I'll get 5 shirts - 1 for each day
3 skirts - 1 will be the school shop skirt
1 blazer
1 jumper - purely for pics

2 pe tops
1 skort
1 pe hooded top
1 pair pe socks

loads of tights and socks

5/6shirts, 3 pairs of trousers, 2 jumpers, 2 ties, 1 blazer.
That's so I only have to iron uniform on a Sunday!
PE kit DS needed rugby kit, athletics kit and we used tracksuit bottoms we had. A thermal skin has been useful too

titchy · 03/07/2012 09:25

Don't forget the cans of body spray too (lynx for boys, impulse for girls) Grin

littlelegsmum your list looks OK but you need to take costs into account. dds logo-ed PE shirt cost £16.50 so could only afford one. I would add some track-suit bottoms for cold weather too.
We also needed a swimming costume as well (plain black with no logos).
Some of the options on the PE list are only if you are on the school team -so check this carefully.
I would say that 2 skirts is enough as they do dry overnight as well.
I have managed with 1 jumper, 1 blazer (chose M&S one as they are machine washable and have a girls option. I bought logo badge myself from school shop and sewed it on)

littlelegsmum · 03/07/2012 10:44

Thanks crazy. It's a nightmare and we've (luckily) had an induction meeting, so know these are things she will need. I know what you mean about the costs as I nearly swore (out loud) when I saw them. We are not tight and know dd does take good care of things so may just get 2 skirts to start with and see how she goes.

My hint... jumpers- 1 that has growing room and 1 in the size above - they will wear 1 most of the time and pre puberty 1x week wash was fine.

1 blazer (we get DS from M&S and sew on the badge- they are bombproof- but the lining is shredded by the end of the year due to rucksack wearing. No idea how some peoples last 2 yrs!)

1 lot of PE kit, get spares if you need them later on (again DS spare rugby kit was a bigger size that his main kit!).

Only ever had 2 expensive logoed shirts for the DDs thats enough to wash midweek. DS has M&S shirts do has lots.

Theas18 · 03/07/2012 10:56

Plain black/navy PE stuff/swim stuff rom the school shop or decatlon is very cheap. It's almost impossible otherwise to get without logo or "branding" from sports direct etc

Get a gum shield ad make them use it too- DS would have lost his front teeth as he got a hockey ball to the mouth a couple of years ago, and who knows how much damage rugby would have done. Buy a good one

bruffin · 03/07/2012 14:32

I would see what they actually wear.
DD 14 and DS 16
DCs school have a school jumper, but the boys never ever wear them, and all the girls wear them.
I have managed on
1 blazer
2 skirts for dd/2 trouser for ds
DD now has 2 jumpers having inherited 1 unworn one for ds
6 shirts/blouses
1 set of PE kit
only DS had a tie and we usually had 2 of those

DD is in year 9 and still in her original uniform, I bought in yr7

mumzy · 03/07/2012 16:11

Theas where do you get a good gum shield for a 11 yr old?

EdithWeston · 03/07/2012 17:29

Not theas, but there are basically three types of gum shield:

a) unmouldable one - usually dirt cheap (£1-2) but offer low protection. On the principle of better than nothing, it's worth getting one to stash in sports bag in case a better one is lost

b) boil and bite - various makes, £10-15. You fit these at home. If you a re confident at doing this (and it is actually easy) you will get a good fit and a good level of protection. You can also remould them a couple of times.

c) fully fitted by the company (some visit sporty schools). Offer excellent protection, but cost over £30. If your child's permanent dentition is not all through, the shedding or arrival of a new tooth will degrade the fit.

I went for level b, but will upgrade to c when permanent dentition through.

EdithWeston · 03/07/2012 17:35

You can get them easily online or from sports shops. Try browsing here, I think the "junior" would probably be the right size. You can always cut a bit off the back if you need too.

happygardening · 03/07/2012 17:44

We do option B; my DS has a problem front tooth and my dentist recommended this he told me not to "waste my money" on a "professionally fitted one" he doesn't do it for his children! You can buy Opro gumsheids and mould them yourself there are three levels and I think the top level (?gold) is pushing £25 + and really recommended for boxers but we use this and my DS's has never lost his problem front tooth playing sport yet! We used to have them professionally made but as we loose the tooth every couple of months we had to keep having new ones made and it was costing me a fortune in mouth guards.

out2lunch · 03/07/2012 17:48

mine go for the capsule uniform Wink

1 pair of trousers

yy to wash blazer weekly

dd is in yr 10 and still on first (and hopefully only) blazer

marriedinwhite · 03/07/2012 20:40

My dd's uniform is non negotiable.

1 skirt - but its plaid so doesn't show marks but we were given a spare by a friend further up the school
1 blazer
2 jumpers
4 long sleeve blouses
4 short sleeve blouses
numerous tights
1 plain coat

1 Skort
1 PE polo
1 track suit
2 or 3 PE socks
1 trainers
1 leotard
1 swimming costume

We had the complication of DD changing schools at the end of Y8. She did almost all her growing in Y6 and I'm certain the uniform I bought with growing room would still have been too big by Y11 !!

Both school's requirements were pretty similar although the first school had a plain skirt and I did need two (two are also useful for when one gets forgotten in the washer or left at school if they are collected from an after school activity for which they have changed).

Nothing non regulation is permissible. Probably spent about £350-£400 both times.

VivaLeBeaver · 03/07/2012 21:25

1 blazer
2 cardigans
3 trousers
4 shirts

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 07/07/2012 18:46

I'm taking the same approach I have since mine started nursery....

Enough uniform for a whole week and a bit extra as with working full time, not liking ironing and DH working away all week (so I do taxiing to all activities in the evenings), I really can't be bothered washing and ironing mid week ....

And if I am really lucky DH will iron on Sunday evening Wink

So for my DD Y7 and DS Y9, I have / will get:

3 x trousers
6 x shirts
2 x jumpers (logo'd and compulsory)
2 x tie (in case they lose it as instant detention to arrive in school without)
Plenty of black socks
1 logo'd sports kit
1 spare sports kit (from tesco or similar)
Trainers
Shoes
Football boots
Apron for crafts etc
Bag (large - no lockers)
Coat (it's grim up north and our teens wear superdry Grin)

Also get calculator and stationery via school as its cheaper than elsewhere....

But I do an on line order with m&s as soon as their offers start, so 20% off and free delivery and then quidco cash back

HAve spent around £60 on jumpers for both and ties for DD

Around £50 on school logo'd sports kit and around £20 on other sports kit

And £100 ish on m&s uniform

Still to go for shoes, trainers n bags - Dd got superdry coat as Bank had them reduced a couple of weeks back, DS needs bigger one....

Aiming to get it all done on first day both have finished for the summer - then hope they don't grow too much Blush

amck5700 · 07/07/2012 19:48

For my son i have 1 Jacket, 1 Blazer, 1 Jumper, 6 shirts, 3 pairs of trousers and 1 tie. At £18 each for the jumpers, I'll try to make do with one, I am thinking that he wont wear the jumper everyday as he'll have his blazer and a shirt on some days when it is warm. He is also quite a clean boy :o). His younger brother is another matter so I'll have to buy up the shop when he moves up next year!!

Gym kit - 2 t-shirt and 2 shorts, but only 1 fleece and joggy bottoms - had to buy the compulsory ones but actually the bottoms and shorts are all plain black so I can top them up myself where it's cheaper.
