Grammar admissions 2012 - interesting?

I heard this from a very good source yesterday. 2012's year group going into Y7 this year is pretty small; pretty much every secondary school in my county is admitting fewer than their PAN allows.

The result is that the grammars are taking students who have not even passed the 11+ in order to get bums on seats.

So if you are pro-grammar then an appeal (although probably already too late) is well worth it.

Of course if you are anti-selective education it means that even more of the higher achievers have been creamed off.

Ha Ha - waiting for the hundreds of hopefuls on waiting lists for Kent and Sutton grammars to arrive on the thread!

Where on earth did you hear this, and about what LAs?

I would be very surprised if that is the case. In Bucks there are a couple of schools that are usually undersubscribed it just means that they take out of county applications and have surplus places. They don't admit students who haven't passed.

Its not the case in Essex.

Loads of Kent MN-ers appealing and on waiting lists for Kent grammars.
I know one whose ds would have got in with his score in the year his older brother went to grammar, but this year the required pass mark is so much higher, and he has no place, with a higher score than his older brother got in order to get in!

Certainly where I live in Kent, children have been able to get into grammar schools that would have been unavailable in other year. But we're not on the London border.
