RTFQ? Is this a normal teacher comment?

DD got this on her exam paper today, apparently the teacher uses it a lot. I know it could also mean "read the full question", but I was a bit surprised.

also ? Confused

It means 'read the full question'.

MirandaWest · 16/05/2012 22:52

How old is she? I would say it's not appropriate (assuming it's the first thing I thought of). I mark exams for older people and there is no way we would ever put that. Might think it occasionally though.

SquirtedPerfumeUpNoseInBoots · 16/05/2012 22:53

Why what else does it mean?
I only know of it meaning Read The Full Question.

Youre going to say Fucking aren't you?

Silverstreet · 16/05/2012 22:57

thats what all the children think he means

ApricotPoodle · 16/05/2012 22:57

'Read the FULL question' I personally can't see any problem with that, and tbh, if she is old enough to realise the other meaning, then its more likely she'll learn from it and actually RTQ next time.

Silverstreet · 16/05/2012 22:57

they are Y10

OP posts:
LaurieFairyCake · 16/05/2012 22:58

Well of course the badly raised Grin children obsessed with swear words think that Hmm

TheFallenMadonna · 16/05/2012 22:59

I'm not sure it's what Ofsted have in mind when they look for formative feedback...

LaurieFairyCake · 16/05/2012 22:59

Kids are going to read 'fucking' in every acronym with an 'F' but that's because of 'Read the Fucking Manual' - it has never been anything but Read the Full Question.

Putting the Fucking in is only because of RTFM.

Silverstreet · 16/05/2012 23:04

thanks Laurie - I did say it was most likely "full". Good to know it is often used, I will tell her that tomorrow.

I always thought that RTFQ was the rude version Blush. Mind like a sewer.

boomting · 20/05/2012 11:17

It was always RTQ when I was at school. Is the teacher aware of how the kids interpret his acronym?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 20/05/2012 12:51

I write RTQ. Not heard of it with an F, wouldn't use it with an F because it's open to misinterpretation!

QueenEdith · 20/05/2012 12:56

I didn't know the 'f' could stand for 'full', and I bet I'm not alone in that and I'm an oldster whose first response to LOL is 'lots of love')

I'm willing to bet that I'm far from alone in seeing the 'f' as 'fucking' and if teachers of teens isn't aware how that is a (if not the) widespread reading, they are sadly out of touch.

TalkinPeace2 · 20/05/2012 13:48

I used to use RTFQ a LOT - and I did mean the rude version
but then I was marking post graduate accountancy exams and they already had 2:1 s under their belts.
NOT appropriate for children - RTQ maybe

MirandaWest · 20/05/2012 17:13

TalkinPeace2 the ones I mark are accountancy ones as well - I do think RTFQ a lot but sadly the college I mark for would be v cross at us actually using it.....

TalkinPeace2 · 20/05/2012 19:08

Miranda
they did get cross with me
repeatedly
but nobody else was willing to read the audit papers for the money !
we parted ways after 4 years :-)

lovebunny · 20/05/2012 19:15

i've been teaching for nineteen years and i've never seen that before!

Trills · 20/05/2012 19:33

Missing out the unnecessary S it's a very valid and constructive comment.

TheSkiingGardener · 20/05/2012 19:42

I never knew the F could stand for Full.

You learn something new every day....

Ilovegeorgeclooney · 20/05/2012 21:21

Always been Full since I was at uni in the 80's. Use it often and never been challenged and I work in an inner city school. A bit shocked at people making the sort of assumptions they are. If a question asks a pupil to explore and analyse I will write RTFQ and circle what has been missed if they have just explored for example. However in CRAFT............

bigTillyMint · 20/05/2012 21:23

DH says he puts a Q and a ? in the margin.

manicinsomniac · 21/05/2012 22:32

I use RTQ or NTQ (not the question).

However, with a pile of Y8 comprehensions beside me right now, I'm so tempted to switch to RTFQ - and it would be the rude version!

verona · 07/06/2012 13:52

My son was taught this acronym whilst preparing for his year 6 SATS. Seems his teacher said something along the lines of 'well, OF COURSE the F stands for full'. The LSA then said 'You're going to get some complaints about that'.

pattercakes · 08/06/2012 15:41

Amusing in a droll sort of way.
