I'm thinking of applying for DS. What are his chances of getting in? He is Y5 level 4C

In Birmingham ?
My dd 1did some work at 4c in Yr3, and was consistent with L4s throughout Yr4. She didn't get in. Not sure that's what you want to hear. dd2 is L5s now (in Yr5), and we're not bothering to enter her in September.

BW - did you know the entrance exam is earlier this year from what is has always been ? Don't want you to be caught out by that.

King Edwards schools in Birmingham are very competitive to get into. Most children receive tutoring to increase their chances of getting in. I believe if your child is working at a higher than average level in school and is in top set for English and Maths, they are at a good starting level. Current Year 5 children take the exam in September, about 4 months away. My personal view is that a child on 4c in year 5 now has little chance of succeeding. Parents must also think about how their children would cope at a grammar school. At KEFW they get quite a lot of homework and they also cover a lot of ground in each subject quite quickly - would your child be able to cope with this? For more info look at www.elevenplusexams.co.uk under the Birmingham section. The Birmingham Forum section has some good posts about the exam etc. Good luck!

Hmm agree with the last poster I'm afraid.

4c now- near the end of year 5 , with the exam moved to very early September doesn't give him much time at all to get there.

I gave no idea " what standards " they are expecting now but my 3 ( youngest now year 8) were consistent level 5 by year 5. they are /were at other king eds grammars.

By all means sit him for the exam and get a bit of exam technique type tutoring. Please don't hot house him- and there are a lot if hot house things about.

There are also kids at the schools that are unhappy and struggling- because really they shouldn't have got through the exam.
