My son has got a boarding place offer from Reading for Year 12. Would anyone share your experience on this school especially for Year 12?

What is the consequence for U entry if my son does not choose Chemisty as one of A Level subjects?

Thanks very much.

I enjoyed teaching the violin there for two years Smile

And my university course didn't require chemistry A level at the time - but then I'm not sure where chemistry fits in with Music. Or planning. Or urban design.

How do you feel this school such as the discipline of students, learning atmosphere?

My ds certainly will not become musician.

The boys I met there were generally polite and confident. At the time, individual music lessons were held in a building separated away from the school, so I didn't get a feel of what it was like in the main school.

There are plenty of other subjects that you don't need to take chemistry A level for to be able to get into University. Law. English. Maths etc. Why do you have an issue with Chemistry? You need to look at prospectuses and course entrance requirements for the types of courses that he might be interested in studying so that you can work out whether the lack of chemistry is going to be a problem.

Thx. My son does not like Chemistry but his career possibly includes pharmacy or some medical related jobs.

From the A Level results of Reading, Reading has great strength in science subjects.

Well, I would say that, probably, with pharmacy or similar, not having chemistry would be a severe problem. I have a friend who has taught pharmacy and heard her complain about poor levels of chemistry understanding. But then, if he doesn't like chemistry, perhaps pharmacy is not the most obvious profession for him?

The fact that a school seems particularly good at some areas isn't necessarily a reason not to go if you're not going down that route - although it would be better to go for a school that has strengths that match the subjects that are of interest.
