Hi
I have a friend relocating back to the UK from the Middle East. Her son is just completing year one of the IB, one subject he is studying is Information technology in a global society. Using the IB website it appears we have to contact each school individually to see if they offer this subject. Even an email to the IB didnt elicit any help. For sure I thought they would know which schools examined this subject??!?! But hey ..... anyway does anyone have any ideas or know how hard it would be to change from IT global society to whatever they study in the UK. Parents willing to relocate anywhere in UK to help. Also they have daughter who will be ready to start A levels (not IB). TIA

ACS Egham and Cobham do ITGS. ACS Hillingdon doesn't.

Thank you, anyone else please?

Haileybury college in Hertford offer IT in the global society.

Assume that you're not interested in the girls schools. Sevenoaks, Manchester Grammar, St Edwards Oxford, Oakham, Fettes, Bedford, St Clare's Oxford, Ardingly and KCS don't offer ITGS. Didn't check Malvern as I'm not sure that they've found a head yet.

Thanks. Gentle bump for anyone else.

Which part of the country?

IdontknowwhyIcare · 01/05/2012 10:00

Any part, they are moving back and education continuity is more important than location.

Tonbridge Grammar School- girls school up until the sixth form, but number of boys in sixth form fairly low, although increasing. Can be difficult to get into, but I know that some children have left their yr12 course this year, so may be worth seeing if there are places.

International School of London - Gunnersbury (Ealing, West London)
North London International School - Friern Barnet, North London

Both of these are private international schools. There are good schools in Barnet for A levels as well.

HTH

Tonbridge doesn't offer ITGS though.

OP, to be honest your friend is facing quite a challenge to find a school which offers, and has places, in all the subjects that her son will be doing. Is there any option of him staying put to complete his second year?

Ladymuck · 01/05/2012 10:52

ITGS is a Group 3 option. Neither of louisea's schools offer it.

From the IBO website it is possible to search for the UK schools which offered ITGS at the last exam sitting. These are:

ACS Egham and Cobham
International School of Aberdeen
Cobham Hall
GEMS Sherfield
Stanborough School, Watford (a 7th Day Adventist School)

Additionally the following state schools also offer it:
City Tech College Kingshurst
Dartford Grammar
Bishop Ramsey, Ruislip
Tollber Academy, Grimsby
Westminster Academy, Harrow
Broad Green International School, Liverpool
Newcastle 6th form

I would assume that your friend will have a challenge getting into a state school, as I guess they would need to be in the UK in order to apply. That said, there are online resources which would allow someone to study for this independently, so your friend could consider other mixed IB/A level schools. Would his current teacher be able to look at whether that is an option?

goldensands · 01/05/2012 12:23

Just checked the tonbridge grammar website ib course info download and it says it does offer ITGS.

IdontknowwhyIcare · 01/05/2012 13:25

TBH I dont think so. The younger daught is just completing GCSE's so it will be the same next year. Also it has been offered for the son (IB first year currently) to say overseas but he is loathe to do so as there is no boarding option. difficult I know but cirumstances conspired against them.

And yes I def understand that it will probably be nimpossible to get a place.

thanks for the info so far.

I would start with the international schools rather than the state schools as they will be most used to having to deal with someone moving mid course (assuming that your friend can pay at least for her son). Finding a place for A levels will be easier once you've found an IB school. Although it would take some work could he not start another Group 3 subject instead?

MOSagain · 01/05/2012 14:03

Perhaps Hurstpierpoint in Sussex. They do IB and A levels so hopefully may be able to accommodate both DC. I know of several children who have gone there having previously been educated in the ME

IdontknowwhyIcare · 01/05/2012 14:04

Lady Muck I suspect that is what will happen but he has been doing very well with this and really wanted to contiue it, but hey ho, what will be will be.

If he is doing well, then this is one subject where he could do an online course (the very nature of the subject encourages it!), especially if this is one of his HL subjects. In which case you could look at a wider range of IB schools possibly, though to be honest a Y13 move is so unusual I would still look to the international schools (inclduing louisea's recommendations) as being in the best place to accomodate somebody. Unfortunately some schools (esp state) won't want to take the gamble on someone for 8 months who might then skew their results.
