Her words "ICT is nearly full so Mrs * asked would I like to do French (her second choice) so I said yes."

She isn't great at French and very good at ICT.

Should they not have asked her to talk it over with us first?

We were told we would be consulted unless it was a change in moving the same subjects into different blocks or using the reserve choices, then we wouldn't be asked.

Sounds like they have spoken to her in order to use her reserve choice, is that right? In that case, it seems perfectly reasonable.

cocolepew · 20/04/2012 16:03

They probably only asked her because she's a soft touch Grin

She couldn't pick anything else but French for her second choice, she is woeful at it Shock

I've phoned and spoke to the teacher in charge and she said she'd look into it.

I'm dead bolshy Blush

I think your doing the right thing coco
Gcse in ICT will be useful in almost any job, unlike French!
Why should she be asked to swop? I'm guessing she is trying to keep her teacher happy??
It's sometimes good to be bolshySmile

She was in tears the other night because she couldn't figure out how to ask for a glass of water in French, I hardly see her making a career out of it!

It's typical cutbacks, there isn't enough computers for everyone who wants to do ICT. Well there bloody should be.

I feel a letter to the LA coming up Wink

Why should she be asked to swop? I don't think she has. This is option allocation time and they are trying to pull the groups together. Sounds like ICT is oversubscribed so they were looking for students happy to go with their second choice. That's why second - or reserve - choices are asked for.

Hopefully your call will make sure she is only given second choice if absolutely necessary.

Kez100 · 20/04/2012 16:16

Why did she pick French as second choice then? It's hardly the schools fault for thinking it was her second choice!

cocolepew · 20/04/2012 16:20

She had to pick it, the others in the option box weren't open to her because she hasn't done them this year.

She knew she'd boobed because she got in the car and said do you want the bad news Hmm

I'm not saying she's more important than any other pupils you have picked it, but of course she is Grin

ICT is supposed to be being scrapped by the government from September because employers apparently think it is not fit for purpose and being replaced by a computer programming style course, so perhaps the school don't have a teacher qualified to teaching the new programming.

That makes more sense Sufflolk, saying that my knowledge of it is MNing and buying shoes online.

She was saying RE and business studies have been dropped from the exam timetable because not enough pupils picked them this year.

You think schools would know that ICT must be one of the most popular subjects?

They are dropping it because it's not a rigorous academic subject. The idea is turning ICT back to be more computer science, like the old days. I did things like flowcharts, algorithms, binary arithmetics, simple data structures, and obviously actual programming. To any of you reading this and aren't a software developer, these are more useless than trigonometry. I'm a software developer and I love my work. But I honestly can't see why we need to make everyone programme a rapsberry pi. Unless you pursue a career in engineering, computer or physical science, There isn't much use in scripting or programming, is there? More kids will find office skills much more valuable.

LittenTree · 20/04/2012 19:16

may I draw your attention to this??!

Wonder if you'll be as flamed as I was for suggesting, in my case, the precursor of 'office skills', being 'typing' is more useful for the less able!

OneLittleBabyTerror · 20/04/2012 19:19

But even for professions like lawyer and doctors, office skills are essential, computer science skills is not.

I'll have a look at your thread later.
