Let me recommend a place for work experience

I've been reading MN for a while but never posted last years I read stuff about the dreaded work experience for yr 10. I had terrible trouble trying to find somewhere the school suggested gardening or farming neither of which my DS has any interest in! Finally I was given the details of Quinetiq a defence research centre based on Salisbury Plain but over 60 miles from where we lived. We read the details liked what we saw and my DS applied and got a place. This is the best thing he has ever done he has come home every night raving about it. It is a completely organised program he's been with their fire brigade, he's made things, "assisted" in the maintenance of some of the RAF planes, designed things on a computer, climbed over RAF planes/helicopters and more. Everyone has been fabulous and welcoming he's left completely inspired. To anyone who lives in the "area" I cant recommend it high enough and it was for us well worth the very tedious journey. I understand they take school aged children 3 times a year and the dates are fixed but on their web site do consider it.

That sounds great! We have just had our letter telling us that DD needs to organise her work exp - unfortunately we are in the NW. Wants to do something medical but the hospitals won't give them work exp unless they are over 16 and DD is only 15. We will keep looking..........

Its because of their age no one wants them. All the companies I contacted muttered on about health and safety but I suspect frankly this is an excuse. Qinetiq is a massive multi national company and has staff available for this this they seemed to have an organised system and we're completely geared up for it. I found smaller companies also muttered on about paperwork/supervision/finding them something to do etc. God knows why gardeners and farmers are ok its the same for them.
There's confidentiality issues in hospitals as well. Although I wonder if again this is all an excuse Qinetic are a top secret MOD research base!

My son did his work experience with bailiffs in the East End of London. It was hard work and they started at 6am, but he said now he's determined never to get into debt if he can avoid it.

My DCs school are stopping WE in year 10, this is the last year it will happen then.

The current year 9s are the first to have to stay in education till 18, so they are going to do WE post AS levels. It is hoped that as they will all be over 16 there will be more choice.

hellsbells Has DD considered doing hers in a special school? I work in one and we get quite a few kids come to us for work experience who want to go into medical careers.

some hospitals do allow work experience. I took my ds to a hospital appointment with his consultant paediatrician & he had a work experience girl in with him, she looked about 12!
He just asked if i had any objections, she was actually really good & kept ds amused while the doc went through ds's results.

Oh, also the medical depts at uni's may be able to help.

Thanks for all the advice. Will start phoning a few places today. Is it better that I phone initially or DD?
