what does a four mean?

Hi All, big stranger on here,havent posted in ages and good to be back from busy life. My ds has just told me he got a 4 for his English essay and says this was one of the best marks in his class. With everything changing atm due to curriculem for excellence not sure what a four means .. can anyone help?

Depending on age and ability it could be....

GCSE band 4 - there are 5 bands with 5 being highest.

Or Level 4 - the average expected level for a 11 year old.

Thanx Kez100, I should have mentioned that we are in Scotland so GCSE is not applicable here .

I'm a Scottish Secondary teacher (my subject's not English) and I have no definite idea what a 4 would be. However, if the teacher has marked that is essay is of the standard of someone working on Level 4 (CfE) then that would be good as this is the highest level of CfE.

Not a definite answer but just an idea.

Guidelines

There is some information here about what would be expected from written work at the various levels. Look at page 14 onwards.

Thanx for your help , I've had a look at the site you recommended and hopefully this is what the 4 means. I was a bit concerned initially as my understanding was that band 1 was highest. I may be old fashioned but why cant we just stick to simple A B C D E system and then everyone knows where they are?
