Anyone else waiting for these from the exams in January?

Not sure if it is the same exams as DD takes separate sciences, but she just texted to say she got A*s in all 3 which was unexpected as she thought one of the papers was unlike anything she had seen before. She took one paper in each science with the others to be sat in the summer, so at least the pressure is off a bit.

AmazingDisgrace · 08/03/2012 12:02

Well done her! Mine texted, she got all Bs which is lower than predicted. I think it was the chemistry one that was different to what they were expecting.

Well B's are still very good. I think there was a thread on TES fairly recently, that one exam board had been particularly harsh with the science exams in November. I don't think it was AQA but it made me wonder. To be honest, I think a lot of it is how well the school prepares them with exam technique etc. My DD used the CGP books and also went through all the old papers. I think there is a definite technique to answering those questions which she seems to have hit upon as she is not a particularly diligent or hard working student! I think she found the biology paper a bit "random" as she put it.

bruffin · 08/03/2012 15:40

The biology one threw Ds, he only got a C
Chemistry was a B and should have been better, but got an A* for physics with 95%

Also found out he got to the interview stage of Arkwright scholarship for 6th so a mixed day.

gnushoes · 08/03/2012 16:37

DD got 2 Bs for physics -- usually A/A* student so not happy. Friends' results seem a bit all over the place too. She is wondering about resit.

OrmIrian · 08/03/2012 16:39

Oh god! is that today ?

NotnOtter · 08/03/2012 16:42

I better refrain from comment at this stage : /

Doilooklikeatourist · 08/03/2012 20:37

DS had a U in biology . I'm not impressed . He wants to try a resit and work an awful lot harder
He's in a class of 33 for A level Biology , apparently most of them did equally badly , seems like a lot of students for an A level class ? Or am I deluded ?

OrmIrian · 08/03/2012 20:53

DS doesn't know his yet. THe school haven't given them out for some reason Confused

notanotter · 08/03/2012 21:22

doilook! We have two of those grades chez us today - also not impressed - however equally not surprised!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 08/03/2012 21:35

33 in a class for A level biology is massive. How do they do practicals? Also feeling very sympathetic for his poor teacher - that's a lot of marking.

TheFallenMadonna · 08/03/2012 21:38

Ours were about a grade down on what they should be. But not as bad as we had feared after the Edexcel disaster in the November series. We are optimistic that in June we will be where we want to be.

Kez100 · 08/03/2012 21:41

Daughter did brilliantly. Two grade Cs on foundation modules both with maximum UMS.

AmazingDisgrace · 08/03/2012 22:11

Ah I didn't know A levels were out today too.. i was referring to GCSE. Looks like there has been a bit of a mess up with the new AQA spec at DD's school, hardly any of the top set students got their predicted grades and there was a lot of panic and tears. I think resits are on the cards here. DD is pretty OK about it, she's not going on to do a science at A level and a lot of her friends who were also predicted A's got far worse results today.

Its just a shame that as she was predicted straight A/A* across all her gcse subjects she might have to take on the extra workload of resits for this. I need to speak to her school because they need to do something to sort this!

I had a quick look on the TES forums (under science) and there were a couple of posts stating that results were worse than expected. We went to DD's school last night for an event and they stated how pleased they were with the results. Most of DD's friends got A*s and several had 100 ums for each science. I imagine that poor results were down to the school not preparing them properly - not blaming the teachers - I imagine it must be difficult to know exactly what the exam boards are looking for.

bruffin · 09/03/2012 09:26

I remember DS coming out of his Biology saying there was things on the exam that hadn't been covered, but his teacher said that they didn't need to have covered that subject as all the information was in the question. Turned out DS was 2 ums points from a B so hopefully his other scores will have pulled it up.

mrsrhodgilbert · 09/03/2012 17:35

According to dd, the whole of year 10 are going to resit all three sciences in the summer. Sounds like the results were very much adrift from what was expected. The science teachers were being very cagey about results on Tuesday evening.

Suchislife · 09/03/2012 17:52

DS got B for Biology and A* for Chemistry (GCSE modules). Equates to an overall A so far apparently.
He is celebrating with his mate now who got an A for both.
I'm really pleased, because he is a lazy so and so and the arguements we had over revision (or lack of) during the Xmas holidays were dreadful.

He has Science CA's next week-I hope the good results will motivate him to prepare over the weekend!

Mumofthreeteens · 09/03/2012 18:54

doilooklikeatourist snap!
Ds also got a U in biology As. Hopefully it has given him a huge shock and he will now get his a**se into gear and work his socks off. He is upset as he got a C in his mock and obviously thought he'd do better than that.

I have emailed the teacher asking for a photocopy of his exam paper so he can see where he went wrong. I saw that advice on the student room site.

Can't believe his exams start and end in May. Not sure I can cope with the stress!

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 09/03/2012 19:03

DD got hers yesterday, bizarrely she got best in biology (when everyone came out crying because it covered stuff not in syllabus, apparently) but not v good in physics which she thought was walkover.

She reported lots of sixth formers openly weeping over their results though Sad

asiatic · 11/03/2012 19:13

Mumofthreeteens, you can get the exam paper back, but you will need to pay for it.

As a general rule of thumb, approx 1/3 of students who are accepted for AS levels will be turned down for A2 levels, in some schools, that is much higher. 33 is a large number for AS biology, but it is likely to be much lower in the A2 year.

The exam paper is supposed to contain questions on subjects that have not been studied. The whole point is for students to show they can take their knowledge and understanding, and Apply it in new situations. Factual recall won't get you an A level.

MsAverage · 11/03/2012 19:25

BBBB in science + ICT. Furious. Ok, for science she was preparing on her own, fine, no wonder. But ICT was so poorly covered in school (whole parts of syllabus omitted) that I was doing revision with her! And she has B! Agrrrh!

OrmIrian · 12/03/2012 10:03

DS finds out today when they have their first science lesson since the results come out. Not overly confident. His best mate is in the next set down and got told his early because he got the highest result in his set - a C+. Hmm I am not hopeful.....

OrmIrian · 12/03/2012 16:43

Still waiting for him to come home

I have a really bad feeling about this. The only revision he did was manic cramming with me the week before. He said they were OK - and as he always overestimates how he's done in tests I guess he probably didn't.

OrmIrian · 30/03/2012 10:31

Cs in all three.

Typical DS1 though - a bit meh but OK.

'Do Not Expect Great Results from DS1 As He Is A Lazy Bugger! '

DS was quite releived. And from some of the comments on here about how dreadful they were I guess it's not bad.
