Have you ever been employed on UQT scale?

If so, I'd be grateful for some further info: feel free to PM me if you'd rather.

  • Were you eligible for local govt pension? Or did you have to switch to teacher's pension?
  • Was your salary pro-rata'd
  • What hours/weeks were you contracted for
  • Did you have to meet QTS standards?
  • Anything else you feel may be relevant.
  • Did you get an automatic increment each year, or were you employed on a fixed point on the scale?

Many thanks

As an unqualified teacher you would be eligible for the teachers pension (better than local govt). Your salary wouldn't be pro-rata unless you are part time. You generally have the same terms and conditions as a qualified teacher in respect of hours/weeks, i.e. you would work 195 days per annum (inlcuding inset days). Teachers hours are measured in percentages so full time is 100%; 4 days is 80% etc. However, mornings are regarded as more, i.e. a morning is 12% and an afternoon is 8%. Your salary is based on the unqualified teachers pay scale and assuming you work a minimum of 26 weeks per annum, you would increase each September to the top of the scale. I think there are 7 points!!? You don't have to meet QTS standards as you are not a qualified teacher. However, you can only be an unqualified teacher for a maximum of 4 years - you then need to have at least have embarked upon a route to gain QTS. You can also not work as an unqualified teacher within a PRU.
If anyone wants to amend/add to the above, please do so.

I worked an UQT and can confirm that everything Angeleyes said happened for me, except I think it's a 6 point scale?. Another useful point for you though is that the UQ pay scale overlaps with the main qualified scale so when I finally gained QTS I went in at a higher point than an average NQT on the main pay scale with no issues.
