I do hope this thread will be helpful - please note it is based on current information and is not in any way meant to suggest help WILL be given by any of these trusts and charities. It is just an idea for those who may find themselves in sudden financial difficulty - do please note the criteria for each one however as almost 100% will not help in the case of financial hardship alone. People should also bear in mind that a lot of these charities, thanks to investment income being much less than in previous years and having many more people applying, may well now have far less money to offer, have a freeze on new applicants, or find themselves having to reduce the amount of any existing grants. I will make a new post within this thread for any that might be useful as well as, once I get to the end, some guidance notes on applying etc. Please be patient - it may take me a little time!

The Athlone Trust

Adopted children under 18 who are in need (might consider 19 if still in full time school education). Only offers help for school fees, not college etc. Sometimes gives on-off amounts to help with education 'essentials'. Applications are required in writing.

The Emmott Foundation

For 6th form education - either part way through or just starting. Cannot meet the cost of education because of sudden catastrophe - be that financial, illness, divorce etc. Usually for the more academic who would expect to be going to uni. and have achieved A* grades at GCSE. Will make a termly contribution to school fees. Will probably not help where a school is not willing to pitch in financially. Application by a form supplied by trust.

Frank Buttle Trust

One of the most useful to get in contact with. For children with 'acute needs that cannot be met within the state education system'. For adopted children, those in the care of grandparents or relatives/friends, single-parent families, ill or disabled children (including terminal illness), those with 2 carers. Usually for secondary age only. Does not help in cases of parental preference for education, not settled status UK, children cared for by NI Health and Social Care Trust of local authority, those normally resident abroad. Helps with boarding fees where fundamental social and personal needs cannot be met at home - e.g. age or ill health of those with parental responsibility. Help with day fees will only happen in extreme cases (suicidal, phobia, low self-esteem, protection from damagin situations like bullying, etc). Applications are usually made in writing via agency or organisation assessing the child. Full details should be given as unemotionally as possible.

Joint Educational Trust (JET)

Designed to help children who would be better off in independent schools because of a risk to them at home or with a poor home life where the family cannot afford it. For ages 7 to 13. Free and reduced places at independent schools are a possibility or sums of £500 per term to make up a shortfall of other funding. Helps children who have suffered tragedy or trauma. Absolutely will not help in cases of financial hardship alone - there must be a social need.

Royal Wanstead Children's Foundation

Children 11 - 18 whose home circumstances make boarding essential - lack of parental care through death or permanent absence of one or both parents, chronic and enduring mental or physical ill health of parent, disanility of a sibling sufficiently severe to affect normal care and development of other children, abandonment or abuse of child. Grants given towards school fees because of boarding, not educational need.
