Year 7 levels

I have just had my first year 7 parents evening with my eldest child. On science & maths they told us she may achieve level 6 by the end of the year.
What does this mean and what are the levels for senior school? I understood them up to year 6 but am lost again now

Everything needs to be taken in the context of her prior attainment. With those Y7 levels I asume she was 5 5 5 at primary school. We're targeted for children making 2 levels of progress across KS3 so a L5 child should be L7 by the end of Y9. It sounds like she is making good progress. The maximum level in Englsh and science is 7 and 8 in Maths.

Thank you for this info. No she was a 4a in maths leaving primary and 3c in literacy. They said she is making amazing progress since September in science and maths & seems to have found her niche. Thats why the levels didn't really make sense. She has just been diagnosed as dyslexic which came as a surprise so we really want to keep any even closer check on her progress.

That's really great progress, edact.

Achieving level 6 by end of yr 7 is indeed a great achievement and indicates she must be among the brightest in the year.

Her dyslexia is unlikely to affect performance in science and maths that much. May result in her having to work harder at English and languages but should not be a barrier to good achievement.

Just done a quick internet search and found some level description posters for maths (word documents - have to download them). Might be useful for you to be aware of what she needs to do to achieve level 6. The website is www.lancsngfl.ac.uk/curriculum/math/index.php?category_id=642&s=!B121cf29d70ec8a3d54a33343010cc2 i'd stick to the level 5-6 posters. They seem to be quite kid friendly too. In terms of science to be achieving level 6 by the end of year 7 is fantastic but definitely possible. Roughly level 4 is being able to describe processes and concepts, level 5 is being able to explain them and level 6 is being able to apply previous knowledge to new situations and link ideas. Feel free to Pm me if you want more info. PS hope the link works (!?)

Am reading this with interest edact as I am finding something similar with my year 7 dd. But if level 6 is exceptional in Y7 should I be suspicious that for one subject 6c appears to be the average for her year group ?

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/02/2012 16:15

I am struggling to puzzle out the levels too, dd has had her report to review before it comes home and whilst I know that she is able, some of them seem a bit bonkers and I think the school must be inventing them. Do schools do this? (she got a 7a in English and Science ) - how can they say that when she has so much of the curriculum to go? Her maths was the same I think but that is her thing.
Not a stealth boast - just really really puzzled.

Perhaps that is her target or end of key stage prediction Kitten?
Ds1 is yr 7, grammar and his predictions are 7' & 8 for maths. His current levels are 6a for core and I know this is in the top few % because he got an award this week.

OhyouBadBadkitten · 03/02/2012 17:31

no her predictions are all 8's which is reasonable for maths because she gets her own work set for maths separate from the other kids. We can accept that one as we have concrete evidence for that (100% in her maths sats with no extra tuition and she does quite complex algebra for fun - she likes it because it is 'ordered and makes sense') but the others are just plain silly. I think we will have to have a chat with school and ask them about it. Not sure how you ask a school whether they are sure they arent just making it up!

Ingles2 · 04/02/2012 19:43

TBH kitten, I thought 7 was the maximum for end of KS3 in English...
Could be wrong though, and of course your dd could be a genius Grin
Just take it all with a pinch of salt I think,...just be happy she's doing really well

OhyouBadBadkitten · 04/02/2012 20:30

so did I!

I reckon you are right. dd works hard and is doing well. I can let the school play around with silly numbers as much as they like.
