It's nit terribly clear from the article what teacher training the ex-military people will have completed. If they have been through one of the established programmes of training, then they will be as equipped to be teachers as anyone else (assuming that teacher training is indeed rigorous). In this case, I do no see a problem, as military ethos schools such as DOYRMS have been running successfully for generations.

If they plan to use unqualified staff, then that wouldn't apply.

I think EdithWeston that sadly you'll find that in the last few years the DOYRMS has not been that successful certainly at prep school level and that its had to change its admission policy. We had quite a few military parents at my DS's prep (same county) and many were unimpressed with the DOYRMS and send their children else where.

It changed to allow children from civilian families to enter the school (and I suspect that it was to pave the way for it to convert to free school status).

It's not a selective school, and it's results are middling - and that's true of many, many schools.

happygardening · 26/01/2012 10:50

It changed because it couldn't get enough children from military back grounds primarily because the Mod contribute to the fees although I understand this is stopping.

I've just been to check its results - I think I've done it down 91% with 5+ good GCSE only (though lower in EBAC) and 98% with 3 A levels (av points 787.9), value added 999.4 (essentially neutral?). That's a lot better than many.

I don't know the school that well, so I'll bow to your greater knowledge about the MoD and boarding fees. It's now listed as an academy, and it couldn't have become that with its previous admissions policy.

happygardening · 26/01/2012 11:20

I'm not knocking I don't know that much but used to live pretty close to it (oh I do miss the sea) so thats why I know it wasn't not doing very well; stuff in local papers, gossip etc.

As it's state boarding, the MOD would be encouraging use of boarding here as it is far cheaper for them to fund.

The rule changes that came in recently apply to new CEA claims for sixth form if no claim previously made, and that the eligibilty criteria have been tightened and will be subject to much greater scrutiny.
