Schools offering largest music scholarships

Colleger · 23/12/2011 21:42

Just wondering if anyone knows of schools offering more than 25% non-means tested scholarships to musicians. I've noticed Shrewsbury may offer up to 50% but can't seem to find any others.

Uppingham also offer up to 50%

PushyDad · 24/12/2011 09:42

Habs Boys (Elstree) offer 50% which is shared out between 2 or 3 boys, depending on xyz.

Colleger · 24/12/2011 10:52

I should have added - not super selective. :)

Have you tried Wells Cathedral School?
They have to be bloody talented?

Colleger · 27/12/2011 19:14

We discounted Wells in favour of Purcell but need a back up if specialist school doesn't work out.

Ahh. Think the only difference is that Wells has a broader al round education so loads of non specialists making it a less intense mix. Might be wrong there but at was my ipression

FinnRoe · 28/12/2011 16:56

Prior Park college in Bath offer scholarships up to 50% (including for music) although the website does say they are unlikely to offer scholarships for more than 30%. I do know a family who have chosen the school because of music however I don't know how strong the academics are. On the plus side that does mean it isn't super selective!

upatdawn · 28/12/2011 18:24

Tonbridge have both music and choral scholarships so that might be an option - without being means tested though they only give 10% fee deduction (however does give free music tuition on two instruments which is valuable). Are you in an area with any suitable day schools because if you weren't looking at boarding the amount subsidised might not be such an issue.
I'm assuming that your son is currently at a school with strong music - can they advise you on other schools that could be suitable?

Colleger · 28/12/2011 19:33

He's going to Purcell and we hope it will work out well but I just need a back up option if it doesn't work out. The school reauditions every year or he may decide its not for him.

Sorry Colleger, the schools I suggested were as an alternative. But it really is worth checking out local day schools. Also, if Purcell doesn't work out there is a higher chance that a less selective school would be able to admit your DS at what I guess would be quite short notice. Are you looking at 11+ entry or 13+ entry (or at another point of entry)?

Colleger · 28/12/2011 21:53

It would be 13+ although I hope he won't move of course. I know of schools that would have him but scholarships are 10% or less even with means testing.

How about FinnRoe's suggestion of Prior Park?

FinnRoe · 29/12/2011 13:07

I've just been reading another thread where, Colleger, you've posted that you've only ever consider Eton and Win for my son. Are either of those schools a possibility?

Colleger · 29/12/2011 13:15

That's for my other son. I'd definitely consider others for my music boy. Not sure he'd thrive at Win.

OP posts:
FinnRoe · 29/12/2011 13:18

Oh sorry, so how about Prior?

Colleger · 29/12/2011 14:04

Will look into it. :)

Have you looked at Ampleforth College, Dulwich College or Wellington College?

MuddlingThroughItAll · 30/12/2011 13:06

Are you in an area with good day schools, Colleger, or is there a particular area you want to look at? If not I would suggest Bryanston, Charterhouse or Stonyhurst?

Colleger · 30/12/2011 16:41

It says music scholarships at Ampleforth are honorary and carry no remission of fee. I find this appalling as music scholars should get more of a remission than academic scholars. They have to do the same volume of work as an academic scholar, practice two plus instruments and be expected to join numerous ensembles and miss out on things if music takes priority. Academic scholars only need to keep being bright - something they are born with rather than darn hard work!

OP posts:
upatdawn · 30/12/2011 17:42

Sorry I missed that. I too think that's very unfair. My DS has got a sports scholarship for sixth form and the fee remission we get from that is much lower than the academic scholarship his older brother got a couple of years ago even though DS2 worked much harder for his scholarship than DS1! Did any of the other suggestions upthread look any good?

Colleger · 30/12/2011 17:55

Ampleforth looks excellent musically speaking but I'm not keen on the location. If DS wants to pursue music but not at a specialised school then there are more opportunities nearer the big cities. Uppingham seems the best option at the moment because it's fairly non-selective and the instrument teacher works at the ram, but Wellington also seem to offer a lot. I'm in discussions with Stowe too. Ideally he'd get into Harrow but the test isn't until next year and I have to assume he won't get in.

OP posts:
upatdawn · 30/12/2011 18:00

Well we're up north near Ampleforth - it's a beautiful setting but not exactly accessable for getting home at weekends (I'm quite ingnorantly assuming you're in the south). It is closer to York and Leeds than you would expect, though. Personally I would suggest Bootham in York (which I have on a previous post on your other thread) as it just such a lovely school.

upatdawn · 30/12/2011 18:09

Oh and to add Bootham also has strong music as it takes a lot of students from the Minster School.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/12/2011 22:59

I think Brighton College might be a bit more than 25% (nearer 30%) and they have separate choral and instrumental scholarships.

I don't know much about the school itself.

Colleger · 30/12/2011 23:04

Thanks for the info on Brighton. It certainly is very generous indeed and worth looking into. I'll enquire if they'd let my son sit another exam other than common entrance.
