Cover supervisors - quick question for teachers

Ex teacher - left 15 years ago, having enjoyed teaching as a single youngster, but weighed down by marking/admin and wanting more family time.

Now have 2 boys, 11 and 8, so the family time worked! Have worked in another area in the meantime, but need a change and have seen a part-time cover supervisor post at local comp. V. tempted as a way back in school without the marking burden but just wanted to check on teachers experiences of cover supervisors. Obviously they are only as good as the person doing the job, but ds1 tells me they are a lot more accepted than supply teachers used to be and that he treats them as a full member of staff. His mate has less positive experiences to describe.

So how do you feel about the cover supervisory role in your school? Does it work well? What are the pitfalls/advantages if any . . .

TIA

IME it varies widely between different schools. Still a difficukt job for poor money though!

We find C/S role generally works well as they are employed full-time by the school, so they get to know the students and also the routines, expectations and discipline guidelines of the school really well.

Also, when they have a free they have various other responsibilities around school, or can liaise with teaching staff about past/future cover.

I did C/S job for 4 years. It is hard work and I wouldn't go back to it now though; but if you're classroom management is top notch it has its advantages.
