How to choose a Chemistry A level tutor - Bucks Berks Oxon area.

OK so ds is really struggling with his AS chemistry; after being straight A/A* through GCSEs in the subject he now has a teacher who barely touches on each subject before going on to the next, who makes nasty remarks to him and he has a text book which doesn't cover the subject of homework he did on Monday night. For that homework he asked his dad (who has a BSc in Chemistry) albeit from 30 years ago, to help, and neither ds nor dh could find any reference to the subject in the text book so they muddled through with what they could find online. Out of 8 questions, ds got 4 right, so was marked E.

Sigh.

Have previously asked the teacher, at parents evening, whether he needs a tutor but she was non committal.

I think if he has any hope of scraping a b at AS, he's going to need some one to one, but when I look online at local tutors I haven't a clue how to differentiate between them, what to look for.

Does anyone have any generic advice, or specific recommendations for tutors in the Henley/Marlow/Beaconsfield/Wycombe area please??

I'm told these people are good. You only have to book one session at a time so - if it doesn't work - you can change tutor.

My son had an excellent A level chemistry tutor. The tutor is in Watford, but will travel. He wasn't cheap but he was v thorough. PM me if you want his details.

Have you looked through your son's school chemistry AS and A level results for the last two years? Do they attain good grades?

They normally do very well (it's a Grammar) but I think this is a new teacher.

Thanks, am waiting to hear back from a couple in Marlow and Wycombe, if no good will PM you. Smile

Interestingly (to me, anyway), when the guy from the Tutor agency got back to me just now he said this particular teacher (he didn't name her except by title, initial and school, without any hint from me - I confirmed her title and name!) is proving to be a good source of income for the tutors as so many of her A level students are struggling.

Quite a relief in a way to be able to reassure ds that he isn't thick, he just isn't being taught effectively.
