Go to the doctor and get a referral to an ophthalmologist for a proper eye examination. I had a big shock when my DD was three and I took her to an opthalmologist, having had a quick eye check a year before that said everything was fine.

CuriousCrissyRock4QueenMama · 17/11/2011 08:35

Has she been tested for dyslexia? Sorry no idea hope you get some advice soon poor love.

phoned Doctors. got an appt for tonight. hope he will give us a refferal. i want her to do well in her gsces next year cause she has high standards - she wants to become a newsreader but if she wants to she needs a better grasp of English. Does she??

Bonsoir · 17/11/2011 09:04

The very first thing is to rule out straightforward physical limitations (like poor eyesight, poor hearing etc) that are relatively easy to correct. If I were you I would tell the doctor exactly why you want this referral in those terms.

Newsreaders are highly educated and highly articulate, as well as being extremely well informed about current affairs.

CuriousCrissyRock4QueenMama · 17/11/2011 09:50

Hope the appointment goes well.

PrideOfChanur · 17/11/2011 13:13

If you are in the UK,supermama212 ,the optometrist your daughter saw is trained to examine sight and detect problems with the eye and vision - and then to refer on to GP/Ophthalmologist if they detect a problem.(I assume she had a standard eye test, not just a quick chat?)
A child who can't see the board will also not be able to read the optician's chart,so if the optometrist said nothing was wrong that implies she could do that and the other parts of the test normally when she was tested.

Not saying you shouldn't see your GP and follow through to find out why she is having problems at school, just wanted to comment on Bonsoir's saying "take her for a proper eye examination."
That is what optometrists do!

noblegiraffe · 17/11/2011 17:12

Is it just English she can't see the board in? It would be odd if she had such bad eyesight and it hadn't come up before or in other lessons.

Where is she sat in her English lessons? At the back? Facing away from the board? Behind a kid with big hair? Is she saying that she can't read what's on the board or that she can't actually see it?

LIZS · 17/11/2011 17:20

What isn't she grasping ? Spelling, analyticial skills, essay construction, literacy etc ? ime relatively little is taught only using a board these days so wonder if it is a bit of a red herring. Worth ruling the visual issue out though.

Minx179 · 17/11/2011 19:33

You need to take her to see a Behavioural Optometrist www.babo.co.uk/ to get her vision properly tested. A high street optician is just checking her 20/20 vision, not what/how you see.

Have look here www.babo.co.uk/.

I'm a bit Hmm that it has taken until year 8 for anything to be brought to your attention, but not totally surprised.

breadandbutterfly · 17/11/2011 21:37

How did she do in her SATs? Try sitting down with her and a book and get her to read to you. Can she read aloud fine? You could ask for a meeting with the English teacher, preferably at the end of the day in the classroom, and look at where she sits re the board. As others have said, if it's only in English and hasn't been picked up before yr 8, it sounds like a red herring - I very much doubt it has anything to do with the board or her vision. It sounds more like she is struggling in English and using this as an excuse. It could be down to dyslexia - you can ask the teacher if they think this is possible and get her assessed if you think this might be the case.

Only other thing I can think of (as a teacher) is that her English teacher uses very tiny typeface or handwriting or writes in a colour your dd finds hard to read, on the board - if it's that simple, then the English teacher needs to learn to cram less info on the board or smartboard etc when planning her lessons, or use better colours, and give more handouts etc!

IndigoBell · 18/11/2011 11:10

It is possible that she has all sorts of subtle vision or visual perception problems.

For example my DS can only read the boy if he's sitting in front of it - if he's sitting to the side of the classroom he can't read it.

But this kind of stuff is very hard to test for.

Can you ask her to be more specific about why she can't see the board? Maybe it's just sunlight shining on it?

Dyslexia or Dyspraxia are always possible. But again you wouldn't just be talking about an isolated problem with English in Y8 if she had either of them.

supermama212 · 18/11/2011 15:12

thank you!!!
All lessons re board. Doctor reffered (sp) her re english and eyesight.
Just waiting for appointments now.

CuriousCrissyRock4QueenMama · 18/11/2011 16:10

Doctor @ the hospital has sent her for a ct. scan today to see if eyesight is ok. He is also getting a neurologist to come and check for dyspraxia or dyslexia

OP posts:
ProperLush · 19/11/2011 08:23

A CT scan for a child's eyesight?

Not heard of that one before.

LIZS · 19/11/2011 08:31

that seems rather ott

jalopy · 19/11/2011 08:36
Hmm
supermama212 · 19/11/2011 15:10

i thought so too but it picked up that a cyst is causing problems so having an op for that :(
she is Dyspraxic but is just confirmed so dr`s informing school and they will go from there.

OP posts:
CuriousCrissyRock4QueenMama · 19/11/2011 15:28

you've found out she's dyspraxic already?

supermama212 · 20/11/2011 06:55

well , i took her when she was 7 for similar reasons and they said she is fine - your paranoid!
they did a writing test and did something else. all that happened @ 9 in morning and got results in afternoon.
Just a relief really to know she is going to get some help to make learning better.

OP posts:
jalopy · 20/11/2011 08:35

I would be more concerned about the appendicitis at this stage, if I have understood your information so far.
