Can anyone tell me roughly how many pupils in a year of 160 pupils would be on the Gifted and Talented register?

Thank you

ASteepLearningCurve, I think that if the school has a registry, then it should be known to the parents. My DS was in the registry and even though the school made it clear in their written G&T policy that the parents were always told so that "targets could be discussed", we were never told. Other parents assumed our DS was in it so I finally had to find out by meeting the head and asking whether that was the case. I just wish they had informed us so I didn't have to appear pushy. We had the right to know. Anything about our children concern us, parents have to be informed about the good, the bad and the ugly.

I agree with the sentiment but as all these things not with the way it has been implemented which can just be a box ticking exercise.

A G&T programme would be effective if the right resources were invested in it. If you have high achievers in specific subjects it would be great if they were inspired by additional activities - it all about developing each child to their full potential. I just don't think most schools have the resources to do that though.

Have you been on the www.nagcbritain.org.uk/ website? Really interesting articles and info on there - beyond the "10%" concept. Gets a bit complex but an interesting article on "levels of giftedness" and how many you would expect in a school (which also, apparently depends on socioeconomic factors as well). Quite a lot of other resources on the website too.

Anything that encourages schools to put extra resources towards stimulating the top kids is a Good Thing in my book. DD has done poetry workshops with professional poets, various science workshops, a maths thing over several months... All great and a change from boring lessons that are too easy. I'm not complaining.

I suspect it's just the label that people object to. Call it something less confrontational if you must.
