Anyone? TIA

I assume that universities which still have places to fill will talk and offer, those who are up to capacity won't. That's fair.

I'd have thought that this student's negotiating strength will be diminished not enhanced by trying to bend Imperial's ear between Monday and Wednesday when the tutors will be up to their ears. His position isn't great as things stand and I'd have thought getting on the phone first thing on the 18th is the most diplomatic course of action and the one most likely to produce the desired result.

Bonsoir · 07/08/2011 11:25

Well it's all sorted. My candidate sent Imperial an official document about what happened in the maths exam and he has his place Smile.

Bonsoir well done to him. That is also vey interesting. DS waiting for his results and needs AAA and one of his exams was maths, one of the papers that had 'problems' with it. I had wondered whether it was worth contacting his first choice Uni and ensuring they knew about this problem with the maths paper in case he doesn't get the A he was predicted on results day. From what you've posted, looks like it might be worth it.

So what was the problem with the IB maths exam?

Yellowstone · 07/08/2011 15:48

That's good then Bonsoir. Now Imperial can concentrate on the fallout from the messy maths A Level we've had! Hopefully they'll take the same approach that this situation does prejudice. Your example is a useful one to cite if any grades are missed and departments take a hard line view.

Yellowstone · 07/08/2011 15:57

mumofsussex it's very similar, marking on three out of four questions and multiplying up.

I can't see that an e-mail before the 18th can do any harm at all. Your DS has legitimate concerns after that paper and they're not going to refuse him a place if he does get his A and his concerns prove unfounded. Departments are used to worried candidates contacting them, but there's going to be a huge rush on the morning of Thurs 18th. Besides, I bet other candidates have already done it!

Bonsoir · 07/08/2011 18:01

mumofsussex - my candidate wasn't IB, he did the French bac. One of the four questions on the maths paper was leaked, and so it was cancelled and the candidates were marked on three questions. Which obviously pissed off those candidates who felt they had done a good job on the cancelled question.

Bonsoir sorry, misunderstood and thought IB. I can see why some candidates upset if they had worked hard on it. I still cannot see how the examining board can fairly mark the A level maths paper that had errors in as the error affected candidate in various ways Sad

Can I ask, anyone reading this thread with DC who applied to English Universities from Scotland or indeed, IB people who have their results, have your DC UCAS updated?

Scottish Advanced Higher/Higher results were released last week (Thursday).
My DS1 met (and exceeded) his Oxford offer, and the other Ox offer holder at his school also met her offer, but Ucas has not updated for either of them.... it still says "Conditional, Firm".

We are thinking, well there are only a handful of Scottish applicants to each Ox college, so maybe they will not update until the A level results an the 18th?

Even though DS1 KNOWS he has met his offer, we are all still a bit nervous that UCAS remains "conditional".

Roll on the 18th!

Bonsoir · 08/08/2011 14:45

oldmum42 - why doesn't your DS ring the college he got his offer from to find out?

OP posts:
titchy · 08/08/2011 15:08

Ring UCAS not Oxford! It is UCAS that updates offers from conditional to unconditional once they (UCAS) have received the results.

Ask UCAS whether the exam board has sent them the results, and if they have when they expect offers to be updated, asnd if not when they expect the results.

oldmum42 · 08/08/2011 22:32

I think I'll start by getting DS1 to contact UCAS tomorrow if not updated by then. If they have sent the results to Oxford (which should have happened automatically before we got the results), then I suppose the next step is email/phone his college to check they have the results. I assume that as UCAS only lists "OXFORD" and not the individual college on track, that the results are sent to the University main administration site, then to each College?

Surely the SQA (Scottish exam board) wouldn't have missed sending the results from my DC, or my DC school (as the other Ox offer holder is still not updated either)? Mind you, there was a big balls-up this year with them sending out some results a day early......

Yellowstone · 08/08/2011 22:44

oldmum42, he's in!

I'd ring the college, not UCAS, but there's no chance of a problem, none.

oldmum42 · 09/08/2011 07:55

Aye, thanks YELLOW, we know it's a firm offer and he's in......... it's just making us a bit nervous that it's not yet updated! Also, there's a lot of info you can't access from the OX Uni website until you get a registration code/number, and we won't get that till the offer is confirmed.

I searched UCAS FAQ section and there is one about UCAS not updating, being down to the University sometimes not processing the info for days/weeks (!), so DS1 sent an email to the OX College which made the offer, and we will follow that with a phone call if they don't reply today.

oldmum42 · 09/08/2011 11:11

Update - DS1 College replied to email within 20mins! Said all is well and it should update on or by 15th Aug when they get the Alevel results through. Breathes sigh of relief!

Bonsoir · 09/08/2011 17:19

Great news, oldmum42! Well done your DS1!

Yellowstone · 09/08/2011 19:12

Yes, well done to your DS oldmum! Now he can relax and enjoy the prospect for a few days longer than most of the rest!

oldmum42 · 10/08/2011 18:14

Only a few more days to go! Good luck to all whose DC are awaiting results :)

MUMO.S. ..... the other thread is still there! I was on it having a moan yesterday!

mumofsussex · 12/08/2011 15:20

ooh, will have a proper look, thanks

sieglinde · 15/08/2011 17:57

Universities have the results already, now; they came to us at lunchtime today.

sieglinde, surely Oxford only offers the number of places it actually has and surely very, very few students miss their grades (particularly while you're holding back on the A*)?

sieglinde · 16/08/2011 12:08

Well, nobody in my subject has missed their grades for five years. But it did happen once or twice before then. And it definitely does in other subjects.
