Can they ban a tie?

DD of a friend is due to go to Secondary next September. She likes her shirt and tie that they wear at her (perfectly ordinary) Primary and is a bit cheesed off that the uniform for big school is polo shirts. Certainly they don't look as nice and it does seem a bit of a backward step. I think they used to have a tie about 5 years ago. Her mother laughingly said perhaps they could get hold of one and send her in that. She'll probably have gone off the idea by then anyway, but presumably if anyone did that it would be treated as any other 'violation'.

She prefers a shirt and tie to polo shirts? My DC would take any opportunity to ditch their ties, blazers, and skirts (DDs) but they attend a private school who are very strict on uniform. I'm sure their standards would decline if they relaxed this or even let girls wear trousers, mufti days are different as this is much clearler informal approach and even then there are restrictions on suitable clothes.

I would caution on standing out in this way. Best to blend in at least until you are settled.

DS has a relaxed uniform that the kids chose themselves, they had a few options mind you. They have fully logo'd polo shirts and black trousers. Upper school and lower school have different colours so they are easily recognisable even at a distance and the lower school children can't try to sneak out of the school at break times!! Too easily recognisable!! They also have a second hand uniform service available for parents who can't afford brand new stuff, and it is good stuff too because the uniform is well made and washes well. It can be passed on to younger members too and the school has a relaxed policy on shoes - so long as they are all black they don't mind if they are trainer types. The school grades are excellent too!!

My DD's school has a set style of trousers/skirt, with open necked blouses. Boys wear shirts and ties. Both wear school jumpers with their house colours in. In Summer girls and boys wear polo shirts with their house colours on.

When I was at Secondary School, the boys wore ties and the girls didn't, so my friend and I waged a sex discrimination war and wore the boys uniform. The Head Master was quite pleased with us!

Annoyed about the cost of set uniform in set colours!

Polo shirts are for delivery drivers, leisure centre or pre-school staff. Is that really what want out DC to aspire to?

Or being a delivery driver or pre-school worker...and whoever proved that career outcomes were determined by school clothes!

How many careers are there that require women to wear a shirt and tie?
