I've brought my daughter about to start her gcses the healthy brain food, revision cards, helped clean her room and tested her but now shes worried that shes doesn't have everything she needs for the actual exams so I was wondering if anyone has a list of everything you should have stationarywise for the exams?
thank you

Pen x 2 (black)
Pencil
Eraser
Sharpener
Ruler
Geometry set

She'll be asked to put her pencil case and geometry set on the floor once she's taken out what she needs.

MmeBlueberry · 15/05/2011 12:45

She needs to have a clear pencil case or zip lock bag.

She will have to discard the lid of her calculator.

A packet of tissues is handy.

Any water she brings in has to be in a clear, unlabelled bottle.

t0lk13n · 15/05/2011 13:46

I would take as many black pens as it will hold....nothing nice about a pupil panicking about not having another pen. I have given my son a pack of five to start with. MmeBlueberry is correct in saying what she has. Colour pencils may also be needed in some papers, like Geography.
Good luck to all your children.

Carrotsandcelery · 15/05/2011 13:48

Make sure she has, or the school will provide, the right sort of calculator and make sure the battery is fully charged/a new one/it is solar powered.

complexnumber · 15/05/2011 15:19

Def. check the batteries on calculator.

Also, if it is a multiple choice question paper, make sure she has a 'normal' HB or 2H pencil, not one of those 'automatic' pencils.

Otherwise, all above advice is sound

nagynolonger · 15/05/2011 15:44

Black pens (mine has helped himself to 5!)
Pencils......mine prefer the automatic ones but they take an ordinary one in too.
Ruler
rubber
protractor
compass
calculator if necessary
a few coloured pens if necessary

All in a clear case or a sealable sandwich bag.

ChishAndFips · 15/05/2011 15:58

Everyone else has already said the main things, but I would also suggest her 'lucky' pen, if she has one - though most exams have to be written in black ballpoint/ink, it can be comforting to have your usual pen there too, even if you can't use it!

She will not necessarily have to put her pencil case on the floor. My DDs say in their GCSE and A-level exams it is up to you, however as the calculator lid goes on the floor, she will not be able to get something from her pencil case once it's on the floor, to prevent cheating (i.e. looking at instructions on calculator lid whilst ostensibly getting a new pen out).

scaryteacher · 15/05/2011 16:09

Definitely black pens as the majority of exams are scanned and then marked online and it is so much easier for examiners like me to read if the answers are written in black.

PonceyMcPonce - red pens are on the list of stationery NOT to be used in an exam.
The other thing that they should NOT use is Tippex or any other correction fluid!
ComplexNumber for some exam boards multiple choice questions are done in BLACK pen rather than pencil.

nagynolonger · 16/05/2011 10:40

What happens if they use Tippex?

I'm sure DS had one of those 'mouse' things in his see through case. And it was english this morning......The one exam that has always terrified himSad

senua · 16/05/2011 11:15

The reason that you don't use tippex is because, if you make a mistake, you tippex and then carry on with the sentence, meaning to come back to fill in the gap when the tippex has dried. The theory has it that they forget to go back. Better to cross out, and put in the correction immediately.

crazymum53 · 16/05/2011 13:36

Senua you are correct - students do often do this.
Also if you cross out the answer and do not replace it most exam boards give credit if the answer / some of the answer is correct.

whiteflame · 16/05/2011 16:49

And if you want to go for a re-mark or re-count, you can't if you have used tippex/pencil (could have been corrected after the exam).

Is that right, whiteflame?Confused
Surely the exam board hangs on to the script, so how is a pupil or teacher supposed to change the paper after the event? Especially when the original is on a computer somewhere in scanned, unamended form.

whiteflame · 17/05/2011 04:55

sorry, i'm not in the UK, exam scripts are sent back here. ignore me if they're not sent back there Smile
