Yr9 Barcelona Trip - Spending Money?

bellavita · 04/04/2011 17:56

Hi all,

How much spending money do you think a 14 year old boy would need for a trip to Barcelona? He would be leaving on a Monday (flying) and will come home on the Friday. It is on a bed, breakfast evening meal basis, so we need to give him money for lunches and drinks etc.

I thought about 250 euros and £50 extra (airport on the way out) and then whatever is left should he need to change it up in spain, he could do.

Do you think that's about right?

What do the school say? When my ds went they had a limit I think. It wasn't that much iirc

Beer is expensive in Barcelona.

As the teacher, if the trips been run before they should have a rough idea. Is their going to be trips there that need to be paid for?

I would give about £15 for snacks and £15 for shopping each day (kids tend to go a bit mad!) or give slightly less and provide a pre-paid visa card in case he wants runs out.

bellavita · 04/04/2011 18:05

The school have not said anything yet noddy. He has just today brought the letter home. Deposit is needed by Friday. We would like him to go, but the cost at the moment is £540 , it is stated that this could go up depending on numbers for the trip and if they manage to secure any other activities to those mentioned in the letter.

I am just trying to gauge how much it is going to cost us. (He is already going to Belgium in May to the Battlefields and has a day trip to London for a show too - these alone are on the £200 mark without spends).

inspire - how do we go about getting a pre-paid visa card? do we just apply for one in his name with a credit card co?

I think my son had about £15 a day. They got all food in the hotel and they bought loads of tat at museums and sweets from what I remember.I do remember he bought me a gold egg shaped candle from the gaudi!

bellavita · 04/04/2011 18:12

I hate tat Grin

Agree that £15 a day should be enough. Check with school. If there's not much left over after food, it means it won't be spent on tat. My eldest would spent every euro we gave him, other one less bothered - he got me a lovely little mosaic lizard from Barc which I keep by bedside! Suggest he should get minimum presents for people - there's just no point in lots of stuff.

Suggest a large refillable water bottle to take out from hotel to avoid buying loads of drinks.

grovel beer money?? - he's 14!

My dd (same age) has gone to Barcelona today until Friday.
They are getting all food provided, so that is slightly different.
However they were told 80 Euros was more than enough (unless they wanted to buy Barca football stuff on a stadium visit)
So dd has 80 Euros plus about £20.

crazycarol · 04/04/2011 19:44

DD (13) went to Germany for 5 days last summer. They had all food (+ packed lunch) and activities paid for. The school put a limit of 50 euros on spending money. She spent quite a bit on drinks & chocolate(!) - they had a visit to the lindt chocolate factory, but still brought about 20 euros home.

I guess if they need to buy lunches they will need a little more, but I am sure that the school will give guidance as what is reasonable as they don't want one (or 2) kids bringing far more than everyone else and there is the safety factor too. DD was only allowed to have 20 euros with her the rest of the money was in a sealed envelope and passed to the teacher in charge. They then issued the money when required, making sure that the kids did not spend everything on day 1 or went mad in the airport! The school will have guidelines on this so wait and see.

My DS2 is going to France (Sun-Fri) and i'm sending him with 120 Euros plus about £30.

roisin · 04/04/2011 20:37

At the boys' school they are allowed a maximum of £40 in total spending money for a 5 day European Trip. There were no major shopping opportunities and food was all provided.

£540 sounds a lot of money to me for a trip when they're not even getting full board!

bellavita · 04/04/2011 20:41

roisin, this will include flights, hotel, half board, a trip to the FC Barcelona Museum, a tour of the Nou Camp and a visit to the Antonio Gaudi's Sagrada Familia.
