Extra two years

Just a quick question. Can someone please explain to me what the extra two years are for in Senior school? I cannot seem to find the answer via ofsted or google and I need to make a decision as to live apart from my husband for a couple of years for my son to settle him.

I assume that they are like a sixth form, but want to check.

Thanks.

What extra two years?

Avantia · 15/03/2011 07:03

Do you mean the raising of the school leaving age to 18 in 2015 ?

Yes

It's not an "extra two years". All it means is that all students stay in education - be it at school or college - or training until 18. They could be doing an apprenticeship or NVQs etc in this time. In fact the vast majority of 16-18-year-olds are already doing this so there's no real difference.

Ok, so what we are saying is:

16: GCSE Exams taken

16-18: Apprenticeship, A-Levels, that kind of thing?

I only ask because my husband is in the Army, he will be leaving when eldest child is 14 which is a really bad time to move schools, and I just wanted to see what the best option for eldest child is. I think living apart so he can finish his education in one school would be better.

I think 14 would be a bad time to move - but 16 -eg after GCSE isn't a bad time to move - as lots of children go to college - FE or 6th form college or move to difficult school- rather than staying on at school - depends a bit on the child of course - if the school 6th form is really good - child is really happy there etc

When they bring this in - they can leave 'education' as soon as they are 18 - so depending when their birthday is it may not be two years .
