Switzerland to Surrey with DS, needs place in Year 8

Apologies for long post, but I need some advice - DH called today and advised that we are returning to UK in the next four months. DS currently in Year 7 in International School in Switzerland, so I need to get him a Year 8 place somewhere in Surrey - independent day or boarding school, whatever has availability at this late stage for September 2011.

So I'm totally panicking - ACS Cobham is obvious option as it has the MYP and IB that DS will recognise, but I'm not sure of its reputation. DS is bright, but lazy (!) so would benefit from a school that has higher expectations of him then the current International School he is at, so going down the traditional british BS system is attractive - although a hot-house wouldn't suit. He's more creative, then sporty as well. From what I've gathered this afternoon, some schools take the kids at 11+, but most of the others at 13+. He's missed the deadlines on both of these anyway, so I'd rather get him in to a school that takes them at 11+, so I don't have to move him twice (once into a prep, then into another school at 13+)

It's like looking for a needle in a haystack - and I'm going to have to do most of the research on the schools on-line - nightmare trying to get a feel for the school. Does anyone have a recommendation of a school that might suit? Are ALL private schools very selective? How can you tell the ones that aren't? Major problem is that DS wouldn't pass a competitive entrance exam as he was out of the english system for 5 years - now bi-lingual German, but falling behind on english grammar and spelling because of it.

DS has had an enormous amount of change in his life and I haven't told him about this yet, until I have an idea as to what to do school-wise.

Any advice gratefully received as still reeling from the shock news and panicking that I'm screwing my DS's education up for ever!!

bumping for you - no idea at all about Surrey sorry. Try not to worry though, I had plenty of school changing (including one in yr 8) and my education was certainly not messed up for life, quite the opposite Smile

Have you thought about Guildford?

There is also an American community school in Thorpe, in NW Surrey. Not all Surrey schools are highly selective. The Royal Grammar School (RGS) in Guildford is, as is Hampton (both day) and Charterhouse (boarding). Reeds, Cranleigh (boarding/day, I think) St George's Weybridge (day) are less stringently selective. You can look at league tables (see thread under education) to get a fair idea of how stringently selective the different schools are. There are lots of others I am a bit less familiar with. The Good Schools Guide is generally pretty accurate - a copy of that might stand you in good stead. Good luck.

If you're ok with boarding, then presumably doesn't necessarily have to be in Surrey(?) How about Hockerill in Hertfordshire? MYP and IB, fantastic results, mixed day, weekly and full boarding and special emphasis on languages. Some bilingual lessons from Yr 7, humanities all taught in either French or German from Yr 9 so lots of bilingual kids about.

Should have added, Hockerill is a state school (even though part boarding) so no entrance exams Smile

LVS Ascot isn't selective but still seems to do reasonably well in the league tables. Not quite Surrey but if you are looking at ACS Egham it's only about 5 miles from there. Good sporting rep. We can't afford it but it would be on our list if we could, as it does seem less "hot-housey" than some of the other Surrey / Berks independents.

Thanks for support, ladies. Alice15 - thx for the school names...exactly what I need at the moment to start narrowing down the choices. Has anyone heard of King Edward's School in Witley? Seems to tick a lot of boxes but can't find much personal experiences/knowledge on the net...?

Good Schools Guide is now being processed by Amazon for me as we speak Smile.
