has anyone got dcs here?

if so, roughly how near to the school do you live?

...having sworn I wouldn't be One Of Those People who move to be near a school, I find that we are currently stuck in Southwark, in an area with no dead cert secondaries, with twins, and we can't chance it. We have to move somewhere where there's a reasonable chance of getting into a nice comprehensive school

...so am trying to work out if you need to be on the doorstep of EG to get in.

I asked the head this two years ago and he (was then acting head) was very helpful but this is never straightforward in London and things change all the time so I would go to the school and ask for as much detailed information as they have. Lambeth will also provide the standard data - distance on 1 March and distance on 1 Sept or whatever. If you play your housing cards right, you could end up with a good choice in that area!

bigTillyMint · 27/02/2011 18:58

SHJ, are you not within Charter catchment?

Blu · 02/03/2011 08:47

A parent told me the catchment is now about a Km.
Move to Streatham Hill - the roads between Dunraven and ElmGreen or close to Dunraven and you'll have a great choice!

My friend's child goes to ElmGreen and is v happy, loads of neighbours have children at Dunraven.

SpringHeeledJack · 02/03/2011 15:58

good idea, Blu- however our finances won't stretch to Streatham Hill (now there's a sentence I never thought I'd type Grin)

to BTM

we're miles from Charter, I'm afraid. Ds is at Kingsdale, but he leaves before the dds start (am considering asking him to flunk his GCSEs for a few years, but have decided it's Not Right.

For now, anyway Wink)

Oh, sorry to be presumptious, SHJ. I sort of thought that Streatham is probably about the same price or less than most of Southwark.

4 bed house £270k in Dunraven and Elmgreen catchment

Loads of flats much cheaper, too!

Blu · 02/03/2011 21:22

Pockets of Tulse Hill are cheap (well obv not what a normal person would call 'cheap' in any context other thn london housing) and in Elmgreen catchment, and also bits of Streatham SW16 in Dunraven catchment.

What's the current feeling about Elm green? There were some bullying incidents a while ago and parents looking round reported sense of apathy.. What do parents/kids now report?

Blu · 04/03/2011 11:47

WRT to bullying, I don't know specifically.
There is a new Head - or new since the school operned, anyway.
A friend of mine has a Yr 7 child in the top set, and he is v happy. She reported an incident in which the Head had taken the trouble to call her personally to answer a query she had asked him in the foyer one morning.
One pupil reported a rather odd sounding 'no touch' policy - no physical cntact at all between students - gilrs are not allowed to ink arms or hug each other, for example.

I think there was trouble in the first year's intake.

We went to an open day and were impressed with the way the tutor groups are structured within the 'college' system, and the thinking behind the library use etc.. Excellent facilities and layout. We will probably opt for Dunraven as it is nearer.

Elm Green streams for English, Maths, Science, Dunraven streams for everything.

I love the idea of the 'college' tutor groups- that's their USP, imo

If you have girls, Norbury Manor has fans, and housing round Norbury is more affordable!

The house you linked looks good value (and I agree - more wantable) - I wonder if it is in the EG catchment? Or Dunraven? Hard to say. It should be, for ElmGreen - but otherwise Norwood (not generally a school people move house for, I think)

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 06/03/2011 12:23

Elmgreen was our second choice of school, but DS1 got into Dunraven (first choice) so DS2 will follow him there in September.

I have to say I did like Elmgreen when I first went to visit it, and I loved their Tutor group groupings (iyswim). My friend's son is in yr8 and seems to be happy there (has a few discipline issues, but that's probably down to him rather than the school!)

We're about a mile away (other end of the high street, oddly enough we're opposite the original, temporary site) and I've spotted a few Elmgreen pupils. Actually DS1 has just reminded me that our next door neighbour (Yr8) goes there!
